Holy cow. Thank goodness we pulled that one out. How in the world did Dusty think giving Dempster a week off would be beneficial?

WHO KNOWS?

Well there wasnt really a save chance for Dempster the past week.

This reminds me of the game against Philly last year when Dempster came in with a 2-0 lead, got an out, then walked the bases loaded, then walked in a run, then struck out 2 batters in a row to get the save.

True, but a good manager will give him at least an inning in between to prevent rust. Pitch in the pen as much as you want, it's not the same as facing hitters.

To quote the great people at FJM

"All hail the save! The most arbitrary of baseball statistics!"

Of course

A team's official designated closer must only pitch in a designated save situation. If the closer gets rusty, they must put in their version of Glendon Rusch to get their team's lead down to a 3 run game before inserting their closer.

it would be nice if, after the cubs lose, dempster came out and publically blamed baker for this because he didn't get him into a game this whole week. it won't happen, but all there needs to be is one.

think about it ryan, a practical joke ALL CUB FANS can laugh at.

I would prefer a little personal responsibility. I assume he can get work in the bullpen between appearances. There is no excuse for 3 walks in 4 batters.

because work in the bullpen is the same as being in a game?

No, because having a few more days off than usual is no excuse for not being able to throw strikes with the bases loaded when you are almost 20 pitches into an inning. He had four walks combined in his two recent blown saves. He was getting plenty of work then. Blaming the layoff on his control problems is convenient but not necessarily accurate.

why when you have a closer that has had 6 days off and you are getting beat 7-1(like last night) do you not get him a freakin' inning? guess rothschild felt he would be better on 7days rest...

It also gets Maddux to 138 career Cub wins, moving him into 10th place on the Cubs win list. He's ahead of John Clarkson at 137 and behind Big Bill Lee (not the Spaceman) at 139.

WOW...and I thought only the Cubs could loose games with that kind of an opportunity to win...

My buddy is a Reds fan and I was on the phone with him during the 9th inning. Once the bases were loaded, he assured me that the Reds were just as capable of blowing a game as the Cubs.

EXACTLY the game I was thinking of. It was on my sister's birthday too, so I was pumping my fist and having meltdowns while my family celebrated a birthday. Good times.

Cubs.com[/url]"]We need to start winning more so Demp' can pitch more," Maddux said. "He hasn't been out there for a long time. Once he got 10, 15 pitches in, he found it again, and started pitching the way he's been pitching all year. It's nice to win."
