Of all the players of his generation, he will be the most difficult for the USMNT to replace. IMO he was far more important than Reyna, and what's worse is that while we have some midfield talent to replace Reyna, we don't have anyone ready to replace McB.

Do you guys think that Johnson has enought talent to fill that role?

In the current system Johnson is an off forward alongside a target guy. The wings cross in or play up top to the target, who wins 50/50 balls in the air and knocks the ball down for the parter forward or the outside mids. I don't think using him to fill in for McB would be a wise use of his skillset.

Right now the guys who would technically be replacements would be Brian Ching, and maybe Taylor Twellman and Nate Jaqua, which is why a new system is needed.

Note that McBride was a world class single target man-type player up front. He is not easily replaceable.

Exactly my point, and another reason for why Klinsmann would make an excellent USMNT coach. His attacking style is not dependent on knocking the ball up front to a target forward.

Sure hope this works out:

BroadcastingCable.com[/url]"]U.S. pro league Major League Soccer (MLS) is about to cash in on the sport’s growing popularity with a series of television deals that will bring in upwards of $15 million annually. Soccer United Marketing (SUM), the commercial arm of MLS, is close to a multi-year agreement with Fox Soccer Channel (FSC) for a wide-ranging rights deal worth around $20 million through 2010, according to sources.

With a separate, multi-year deal with ABC/ESPN —said to be worth at least $7 million-$8 million annually—expected to be announced as soon as this week, SUM could have four national TV deals. The others are a previously announced HDNet contract (said to be worth $2 million-$3 million annually) and another deal with Univision currently in the works.

...........

As part of the deal, FSC is expected to acquire rights to an exclusive MLS Game of the Week, a small package of MLS post-season contests, a package of U.S. men’s and women’s national team games, and additional international contests, beginning with a series this summer featuring popular Spanish team FC Barcelona.

FSC is expected to air its MLS games on Saturdays, as will HDNet. ABC/ESPN is expected to carry games on Thursday nights, with Univision to show games on Sundays.

What a great game, and a great thing for MLS.

There were some terrific saves today, and what a goal that was! A laser!

This has got me pretty pumped, as the Fire suck this year.

It's been what, 6 games since a win? Hopefully they can at least take down KC in the USOC game.

I don't like the idea of USMNT games going into what's basically a premium cable/satellite channel. You're shutting out a part of your fanbase.

It doesn't sound like it's all of them though.

If it's some of the ones that don't normally get televised by ESPN, then it's okay. If they take games away from ESPN, it's a stupid, arrogant move. You shouldn't strip a "free" cable TV network of games to put the on a "pay" cable site. Your end result is that fewer fans would be able to have access to the games. Given that the USMNT is still the most important method of growing the sport in the US, they should do anything and everything they can to make sure they have as much exposure as possible.

FWIW, I was delighted at the fact that an MLS all-star team without Donovan, Dempsey, Mastroeni, Ruiz, Twellman, Ralston or Eddie Johnson completely outplayed Chelsea. Exhibition or not, that speaks to how far the league has come.

If Chelsea really cared about winning, they would've destroyed them.

I'm sure indifference plays a part, but considering that it was like an MLS All-Star "B" team it was still impressive.

And FWIW, I think that if we had an MLS select team out there vs an interested Chelsea, the MLS'rs might lose, but I don't think they'd be destroyed. MLS can field a pretty good 1st team.

I don't want to sound like I'm making excuses for Chelsea, they clearly got out played and the MLS deserved to win the game. That said, this was Chelsea's first pre-season game, they always have a handful of new players (Shevchenko and Ballack, this year) that need to learn how to play together, most of Chelsea's first team was out of the game by halftime to give the reserves some training. Man, I sound like Dusty in this paragraph.

I agree with your second paragraph. It would be a much tighter match than a lot of people probably think.

I attended the match on Saturday and sat with the Chelsea supporters in the corner of the stadium. Their attitudes, a lot of them coming over from England, too, were they were gonna cruise to an easy victory. Some of them had kind things to say about the MLS and the match in general.
