I don't know if he's Muslim or not but he sure isn't brown-skinned.

I edited my post quite a bit before you replied because I didn't want to egt into a big debate on this.

Zidane is Muslim. By brown-skinned people, I mean people who aren't Muslim but are still targeted as "terrorists" for their skin color (like me).

Again, I'm not condoning what Materazzi said or did and am not saying he's a good person. But under no circumstances should you get a red card in a tie game in overtime OF THE WORLD CUP FINAL especially if you are the captain of your team. I could care less what Materazzi called Zidane. You can't lose your cool like that.

I gave the same analogy earlier but I'll state it again. What if Jordan was called a derogatory name for a black person by Greg Ostertag during the fourth quarter of Game 6. Then Jordan headbutts Ostertag and gets ejected from the game and suspended for Game 7. The Bulls lose the series. The only difference is the NBA Finals happen every year and a good player will have 15 seasons to win. Realistically in soccer you will only have 3 or 4 chances to win.

Did the derogatory name include connotations that MJ had killed thousands of innocent people?

Zidane shouldn't have lost his cool in the situation, but I have a tough time thinking there's a derogatory name equivalent to "terrorist" in Western society, given its ramifications. Some of the people in this thread seem to dismiss the impact of that word. Don't forget that Zidane is Algerian and the second-class treatment they get in parts of Europe.

Or for that matter, fascist. People like throwing out that one quite a bit.

No the derogatory name for a black man doen't include connotations that MJ killed thousands of innocent people. I'm not trying to dismiss the impact of the word and I realize it's a serious thing to say. But again, Zidane absolutely shouldn't have reacted in the way he did and I hope his legacy is tarnished by this. Just like Maradona with his coke addiction.

People realise that Zidane has been sent off both for head-butting (whilst playing for Juventus in the Champions League) and in the World Cup Finals (against Saudi Arabia in 1998 for stamping) before, so its evident he has a flashpoint and there's something inside which can be triggered by saying something to him - so it was a surprise, but certainly not a shock.

Marco Materazzi is exactly the kind of player who would try and find out what aspect of himself Zidane is so sensitive about and exploit it; if its a weakness, then prey on it. Its not in the best interests of sportsmanship, but if you win the World Cup, nobody's bothered.

My only concern is that the butt was only brought to the referee's attention - as has been rumoured since - after the fourth and fifth official saw in on video; if so, they have contravened a FIFA law, and the dismissal is not only incorrect, but also a joke. It should have been a suspension applied after the game if they didn't see it; like Frings and Cufre in the Germany vs. Argentina game.

Agreed. I know the fourth referee claimed he saw the play on the field and if that's the truth than it's okay. But you're right on the other point about seeing it on video.

do you all think France really deserved to win that game? i'm having an argument with my friend over this.

DC United beat Scotland's Celtic 4-0 today, with DC resting 4 of their starters.

How many of Celtic's regulars were playing?

It didn't really say, but I think most if not all. It is their preseason though while it's the middle of the MLS season.

France's goal was on a penalty kick that was awarded due to a dive. The game shouldn't have even gone to overtime. No they didn't.

Gee, wonder who you were rooting for.

All, but Paul Pierce doesn't have a very strong leg

France was certainly playing better a good portion of the second half and the Italians looked tired, but I can't see how you can say the French deserved to win the match. For all that effort, they weren't able to put the ball in the net again. soccer's point is well taken that France was only able to score on a poorly awarded PK. Maybe in Zidane stays in the game, they score, but I don't think anyone can definitively state that. The Italians were deserving champions. They didn't allow an opposing player to score until Zidane's penalty strike.

Zidane claims he's a man and couldn't take hearing the trash talk anymore. It's too bad he thought of himself instead of the team. I just don't understand all this "I'm a man" I hear from athletes all time. This is how you prove you're a man?
