Was the gun off tonight or is Kerry pitching in the very low 90's. I hope another trip to the DL is not coming.

89-91 FB and the gun was pretty accurate.

I'm afraid, and you should be too, that this is the real Woody these days. Maybe he can become more crafty and learn some tricks so he can remain in the bigs, but the reality is that he is most likely done as a starter. God, I hope I am wrong, but I doubt it.

To be honest, before the season started I felt that Miller was probably the pitcher that I feared most wouldn't produce for us which was fine because of his salary. After watching Wood pitch lately, hear about Prior losing velocity as well and Miller having a setback It's not a stretch to assume that none of these guys will help us this season. Just terrible.

Clearly the return of Prior, Wood, and Lee will help us lose slightly less games than we're already going to.

Projected Record with current roster:

75-87

Projected Record with P, W, and L:

79-83

That's really what I think we're looking at here. Closer to mediocre, but still bad.

I'm sure the waiver wires will be full of really good players Hendry can add to the team to push that win total to 80.

Woody looked bad last night, looked to be really laboring with every pitch thrown. Don't know if he was hurting or what, but he looked like he had been pitching for 9 innings, and his curve and slider were in slow motion.

Kerry's velocity is not as much a concern as his location. He throws hard enough, he just will never have the mechanics he needs to place the ball so they don't hit it hard. I for one am very worried. Maybe Marmol is a diamond in the rough for us.

we can't just chalk it up as a bad outing? when prior comes back and has a bad game, will people say that he must be hurt or "this is the new prior we'll be seeing?" wood pitched decent in his last outing. i just don't understand how people can't say he had a bad outing...there seems to be a knee-jerk reaction whenver wood has a bad game where a few cats say "well, he must be hiding an injury..." or "here comes a trip to the DL..."

are we all that conditioned whenever wood pitches bad that we think the worst is going to happen? i think some of you are jumping the gun on this...if he goes on the DL, i'll eat my words, but i think we all need to take a step back and see how he pitches his next time out.

First of all, Wood is coming off surgery and in almost all cases it takes quite a while for a pitcher to regain his initial velocity.

Secondly, with 4 regular season + 3 rehab starts Wood is pretty much where most pitchers would be coming out of spring training, so he is not going to be as sharp as the guys that have been pitching for 2 months + spring training.

The hitters are approaching mid season form and Wood is just getting into shape, so that is a recipe for disaster.

If Wood makes good throw to third on the bunt in the second he probably gets out of that inning with no runs scoring and who knows what happens from there.

IMO still WAY to early to make any judgements about what Wood will be like when he is back to full strength.

You really think it's unusual for folks to assume the worst about a player who takes trips to the DL like we take trips to the grocery store?

Wow.

a player with 2-3 rehab starts in the minors and 4 starts after coming off the DL. i understand his history fully, but all i'm saying is give him some time to get back into the groove, that's all.

The problem is, time is against the Cubs with Wood. If he takes forever to come back but then is able to put in, say 6 or 7 stunning starts towards the end, maybe bringing him back wouldn't be a terrible idea. But as it stands right now, Wood's most valuable as a trade offer, and unless he picks it up quicker or gets moved to the 'pen, he's not coming off very appealing to anyone, or at least not near the level that's going to get the Cubs some serious help in return.

I think people are giving him his due time. They're just not sure if the other shoe is going to drop, that's all. It's like being hit with a stick over & over. You start to cringe even before you get hit :)

It seemed to me that Wood had little confidence in his fastball. He really wasn't fooling anyone. That walk to Bruntlett in the bottom of the 2nd wouldn't have happened if he was throwing good heat,IMO.

Oh well.....maybe his arm strength isn't quite there yet.

I doubt it. I had my surgery 2 weeks after his, and I still can't throw a ball more than 60-70 feet. I didn't go through the extensive rehab that he did, but I feel the fatigue after about 10 throws.

I hear ya....I'm trying to be optimistic cause its Kerry and good or bad he is my favorite Cub....as I wrote in my original post he just didn't seem to have confidence in his fastball. Kinda sucks but it is what it is.

BTW----when is your 1st re-hab start ?

Ha! I've already started. I had to make the big jump from CF to 2B just to cut down on the throws. I'd be screwed if I were a pitcher.

Cool....good for you.

Hope the injury doesn't cause you early Steve Sax / Chuck Knoblauch-itis.
