I will be visiting this weekend for the Cubs-Reds Series. I have tickets for the outfield bleachers. We will be going to the Saturday night game and then the Sunday afternoon game. I was wondering if there is anything that we should do while we are in town or places to see. Also, if anybody has any good eating places that they know of let me know.

Cincy is kind of a blah place IMHO. Every time I've gone it's in and out. The two Reds games I've caught were because I had scheduled a layover (when flying Delta) through the Cinci airport.

Great American Ballpark is anything but great: think Cominsky before the recent rehab.

I think the area across the river in Covington KY is supposed to be pretty good now.

One thing: get some Cinciannati style chili. I prefer Skyline over Gold Star. Very different style you can't find outside that area. Get a chili 5 way and put the hot sauce on.

I would have to disagree with you on the Great American Ballpark. I think it's a great place to watch a ball game. There isn't a bad seat in the house and it's even better when the Cubs are on the field. I live in Indy and it's much easier drive to Cincy then Chicago unfortunately. My wife and I go there several times a year.

I would take the bridge over the river (it's a walkable distance) to 'Tucky and go to the Hofbrau House. It's a German restaurant/bar with outdoor seating. We enjoy going there before the game to get some grub and throw back a few. And business really picks up after the game.

I do agree, Skyline is a must while you are there.

I was there a few times as a little kid. My family and I would go see the Cubs there.

Isn't Cincy chili sweet? Do they use brown sugar or something like that in it?

cinnamon

Actually cinnamon and allspice. I have a recipe at home that's almost dead on to Skyline.

Adding any type of sugar to a tomato base does not produce sweetness. Some chemical reaction causes the tomato taste to become stronger instead of making the mix sweat. My mom's t spaghetti sauce recipe calls for a 1/4 cup sugar in order to accentuate the tomato taste.

Just look at the ingredient list of any jarred sauce: it will have sugar not far down.

Wow: this is a tangent. Sorry.

I here racism is popular there. Maybe you should try that

I hail from cincinatti, and the place is pratically still segregated.

Ohio in general is pretty bad.

It's not as blatantly racist as St. Louis. It's a good river town and there are plenty of things to do..many in Kentucky. You can certainly find good barbecue and bars that can wet your whistle. Is Burbank's still in biz?

Rocket-I used to go to Chester's Roadhouse between Dayton and Cincy. Is it still there? Friends used to work at Rike's Dept. Store and spent a few $$$ at King Cole. Dayton has some large companies there.

Do you have proof that St. Louis is more racist than Cincinnati? St. Louis didn't recently have riots that cost lives and millions of dollars of damage.

IMHO both cities are very similar. Former heavy industrial cities that have faced significant lost of companies and residents to cities (like Chicago) that have been able to adapt to the late 20th/early 21st century. Both cities don't know if they're midwest, the south or both. Both have rotting dying dowtowns that are possibly coming back. Both have tried to use new sports venues as a way to bring the city back. Both have heavy German heritage. Both have experienced white flight to the suburbs. Both St. Louis city and Cincinnati city themselves have small areas when compared to the vast suburbs.

When I visit either place I happily remember why I love and live in Chicago. (except for my temporary assignment to Springfield Il.)

But don;t throw a blanket racism statement out just because you don't like their baseball team.

St. Louis has always been an intensively racially divided city. The city has shrunk to almost 1/3 of what it was 40 years ago. Olive Street has divided the black area(north) from the white area(south). This has led to development only in the white area. The mass exodus of whites to the suburbs has compounded the problem even more so. Unlike Chicago, there are no grocery stores, service stations or amenities for people to enjoy downtown. Sadly the area around Busch Stadium is not very safe at night and certainly offer only a handful of restaurants, etc.. that would make people want to stay in the area after the game.

The St. Louis Hawks moved to Atlanta in the 1960's due to the lack of support for a changing predominately black NBA team. If this weren't so, why is St. Louis NEVER mentioned for an NBA team. Black baseball players and football players in St. Louis have noted that they have trouble being accepted in the community. Ozzie Smith and Marshall Faulk are exceptions. But Ron Gant, Brian Jordan, Willie McGee, Vince Coleman, Ernie McMillan, etc... all couldn't wait to leave there.

Racism exists in almost everything, but the St. Louis area is notorious for it-Black Jack, VP Fair and Ball and Pruitt Igoe are infamous.

Sorry: my bad.

If I remember right: the bars close at 2am in Ohio and 3am in Kentucky. For late night food I think Skylines are open until after the bars close and Gold Stars are not.

I vaugely remember taking a 10 minute car ride from downtown to the Xavier University area and there being some cool bars in that vicinity. Lots of college aged gals. But then again school is out so that might not be a good option.

I never heard of Chester's Roadhouse. I do know that Rike's was demolished about 3-4 years ago.

I just got back from a great weekend in Cincy...and an incredible game last night with Z pitching!

Friday night I had dinner at the Montgomery Inn at the Boathouse, and heard the fireworks going off at GAB...and I thought, uh-oh, Maddux is getting shelled. Got back to my hotel room (the Millineum, which was a nice short 15 minute walk from the ballpark) and saw that the Cubs won his start.

The next night was my game! I wish the weather had been nicer, as it rained all day long (spent the bulk of the rainy day at the Newport Aquarium...not as nice as the Shedd, but not bad) I was sitting in the lower deck left field area, in section 103, which HAD to have been designated for Cubs fans! I was surrounded by them..and it was GREAT! We were treated to a great game of Carlos ball, and I even got to see Juan Pierre and Neifury get hits. And the best at bat was by Walker in the 7th to load the bases. When Yan came in, I thought to myself, he's terrible, and Barrett is likely to get ahold of one. Well, there it went, and Barrett's homerun hit the wall RIGHT above us in the seats! We were going wild, and drowning out any Reds fans who happened to be around us. Even in the rain, the game was enjoyable. And the park itself is great, not a bad seat in the house.

I knew Rocket was at the game, and I looked for him, but alas, nowhere to be seen!

Great weekend, and I must say, the Cincy fans were great, too.

I was in section 102, so maybe we crossed paths.
