I agree with this sentiment however, this part jumped out at me.

Just about every grocery store in the immediate vicinity of where I live will deliver groceries. I don't do it because I'm not lazy or a millionaire baseball player, but the option is there if wanted to.

Baseball is a clubhouse...when you know some people personally, you make ties and strong friendships. Its only natural he tries to defend his friend. Its not like he's going out of his way, he gets swarmed by reporters all the time.
