This team's window of opportunity has closed. The euphoria from 2003 has now passed and it's time for new management.

Since 2003, we've had the collapse of 2004, followed by the disapointment of 2005, and now the disaster of 2006.

Hendry's track record isn't good. Surely he's made some good trades, but his inability to fix the team's core problems and his devotion to asinine ideas like "having a true lead-off hitter" and "versatile" bench have led to the collapse of this team.

I'd be fine if they left the decision on Dusty to wait for a new GM, but it's time for Hendry to go.

I'm hoping it happens Thursday.

Nah, they'll win tomorrow. Atlanta will then sweep them, everyone will get mad, but then they'll win 2/3 from Cincy and it'll be back to talking about an extension for Dusty.

I was a Hendry supporter back in the day.

He seems committed to going down with the ship. Frankly, I don't care anymore whether Hendry wanted so-and-so or Dusty wanted so-and-so ... Hendry is the GM and it's his call on how to construct the team.

He's done a damn poor job of it.

It's time for him to go.

It's also time for MacPhail to go ... I guess that's a different thread, though.

You summed up how I feel and felt. I backed Hendry all the way in 2003-2004 and fought for him here in the offseason that proceeded the 2005 season. His moves since mid 2005 have left me scratching my head. I used to wonder if he deferred to Dusty and if there might be conflict between the two. Now, I don't care either. Either he and Dusty are two peas in the pod, or he chose to allow Dusty to ruin this team. Either way, he must be fired.

I have begun to think same think. When he traded for Nomar I thought he was getting a steal, and was the smooth operator some claimed him to be, but since then Im not sure i can think of more than a coupe moves i have liked

What is the likelihood of Hendry being canned just days after receiving an extension?

Can anyone think of precedent set by other ballclubs for re-signing a GM and then cutting him loose?

Although Hendry engineered some remarkably creative trades during his earlier days as GM of the Cubs, I think the last three years prove that he really doesn't know how to run an MLB team. Back to player development, Jim - No soup for you!!!

ZERO. Not a chance. Alysso Milano has a chance to being Rosie O'Donnell fat, then the Cubs firing Hendry after recieving an extension.

Not me.

That's a team effort that consists of Hendry/Baker/coaching staff. Don't just single out Hendry, single out the hole misfits of baseball. And I highly doubt he'll return to player development full time. Once Hendry is fired from the Cubs....he'll land as John Scherholz's "special assistant" and becomes the "genius" once again.

It's not going to happen. No way MacPhail fires Hendry. The only way he's gone is if the Trib decides to fire MacPhail, Hendry, and company.

I'm not sure that the extension necessasarily saves Hendry's ass here. How much does he make? I'm certain that he makes less than 1 million per season....in fact I'd be surprised if he makes over 750,000. Teams eat that amount of money in lost salaries all the time.

This team he has constructed is abysmal. It was abysmal last season. It's getting worse. We're about to be swept by the Marlins....a team whose payroll is likr six bucks!

It's time for Hendry to go.

I really just don't see it happening, unfortunately. MacPhail seems to be buying into the whole injury excuse and just finding out a way to, "knock guys in" (when there is no one on to knock in to begin with). I get the impression that Andy believes in Jim, I just don't know why.

They'll probably "shake things up" on Thursday by calling up Womack (for Theriot) and starting him at 2B (hitting 2nd).

That'll show 'em!!

And that's why we love our Cubbies!

I am all for starting over from the top on down, but it aint happening.

They just reupped Hendry for two years, and are not going to fire him less than thirty days after making that mistake.

I doubt Dusty will be gone soon either.

If Hendry is fired (not likely) it will have to come from a higher place then MacPhail.

I'm thinking that could happen. This team is beyond bad; it's an embarrassment. At one point do Fitzsimmons and others start to wonder if changes are going to be made...which could include MacPhail on the chopping block as well.

IF (big if) Hendry were to be let go, who do you bring in as GM?

Would Gerry Hunsicker be interested?

You want me to call and ask?

Sure. Tell him it's a done deal if he brings Roger with him.

It's not the money.

It's the message that the extension sent.

It says, we're happy with the job you're doing, and we want you around for several more years.

And if they were happy with the job Hendry had done as of a few weeks ago, I doubt a handful of losses in a 162 game season has changed their minds.

It's partially the message, but it's also the fact that the Cubs flinch at paying people who don't work for them. GM and manager contracts are rarely allowed to run-out, guys demand extensions early so as to not be a lame duck. But a 2 year extension pretty much guarantees Jim is here through most of 2007, if not all.

While we're on this subject...

Is there any precedent for a GM being fired mid-season? I can't think of any.

Obviously plenty of managers have been canned during the year, but it seems to me that the front office shakeups almost invariably come in the weeks after the season ends.

So the folks that want Hendry's head will likely have to wait for October, at a minimum.

Ed Lynch "resigned" in the middle of a season.
