The Dodgers won't even talk to the Cubs (from what I gather) and they have former Cub people. Why is that?

See: Hundly, Todd

I don't think it has anything to do with the Hundley deal as that occurred under the old Dodger regime. I think it has to do with Coletti's relationship with the current Cub brass as he used to work for them.

I know ... it was joke. Hence the "lol" icon. http://reniewtech.com/images/smileys/unsure.gif

I guess I didn't get the joke, sorry.

No problem.. most of my jokes are more "miss" than "hit". :?

So you are in the Cubs line up too?

Guys...accountability is so 1990's. Its out of vogue everywhere...not just Cubs' baseball.

It's funny because it's true.

That's a very Dusty response. "Dude, its a society problem."

That's fine, but it doesn't excuse the Cubs from doing it.

This team just got done with a stretch of losing of 14 of 16 games, playing some of the worst baseball I've ever personally witnessed, and Hendry and MacPhail are griping about a beat reporter being critical? What planet are they on?

Oh, that's right, injuries. And bad luck. After all, who'd of thought Juan Pierre would suck this much? And the normally reliable Neifi Perez hitting sub-.200? And Jacques Jones sporting a low OBP and an inabilitly to hit lefthanders (why do they struggle against lefties again?). Who could have known that the usually stellar Glendon Rusch would start serving up meatball after meatball? And Mark Prior and Kerry Wood getting injured, nobody could have seen that coming! It's all curses and vodoo, I tell ya.

But seriously, this organization continues to embarass itself, on the field and off. It's stupid things like finally realizing to employ a left-handed batting practice pitcher after 2 years of struggling against left-handed pitching; the whole Sammy Sosa fiasco -- running down your own player and destroying his trade value in the process; the hush-hush secrecy regarding pitcher injuries (the rumors of Mark Prior being hurt are categorically untrue -- headline a couple of weeks later: Mark Prior sidelined with elbow soreness); infighting between broadcasters and players resulting in running a popular broadcaster out of town; trying to turn Corey Patterson into a lead-off hitter when his skill set suggests otherwise. Need I go on?

It's amazing how quickly this thing went down hill. What started out as a young and talented team poised to contend for years to come (coming this close to getting into the World Series; putting up back-to-back above .500 seasons for the first time since the early 70s) has pretty much become a laughing stock. But don't cast blame on the unholy triumverate that is Dusty MacHenPhail, nobody could have seen this coming.

Hmm, seems like us NSBB'ers are quick to slam a column whenever we don't like it. Now we're slamming Hendry for... doing the exact same thing?

That's assinine. We don't run the Cubs. But anyway, I can't speak for anyone other than myslef, but if Hendry were justified in calling a reporter on the carpet that would be one thing. But with the state of the currentl club, it is quite another. And I am in no way defending the hack Paul Sullivan. His sportswriting is just bad, but then again that is not what Hendry was complaining about.

Unless we have the power to call him into our office and berate him, with the implied threat of his job being on the line based on our relationship with his parent company, I don't think this is anything whatsoever even close to what Hendry/MacPhail did.

Yes, that's exactly what we're doing.

We aren't Jim Hendry. We aren't running this team. We aren't supposed to ignore all the peripheral BS and just do our job, which is putting the team together.

No, it's not "assinine" at all. If you or I see something from Sullivan that we don't like, no one is going to get all pissy because we comment on it. Just because Hendry has the ability to go straight to Sullivan rather than whining about it on a message board doesn't make it any different.

He saw something that he didn't like and he let it be known. Not a big deal.

So he's not supposed to respond to anything? All he's supposed to do is put the team together? Name me a GM that does that.

Sure, if there is not much analysis behind the reporting, or if the reporters opinion is not backed up by any kind of facts. The problem with this is, Sullivan was dead on with his criticism of Jacque Jones. I know that sometimes the truth hurts but that doesn't give Hendry and MacPhail the right to act like a couple of 3 year olds and throw a tantrum. They got rid of Mercker because of his problem with Chip and Steve and now they turn around and do the same thing is utterly hypocritical

Is that what the whole thing was about? Jones? Because the article linked in the first post doesn't specify what they were upset about.

There is a difference with letting it be know and calling someone into your office and berating them. Hendry is an infantile egomaniac and deserves to get lambasted over this.

Yes, it relates to an article that Sullivan wrote a while back criticizing Jones as a player. The whole incident took place awhile ago and was just brought up in a recent article.

Thanks goes out to Bruce Miles to really being the top notch writer every sports fan should get for their team.

The Cubs will continue to flounder until somebody takes responsibility for the sucky teams that are run out there every year.

Alou and Mercker were whiny little babies for complaining about the announcers. That's not the same as fans complaining about the announcers. Their job is to play the game. Our job is to watch, listen to or read about the game.

It seems Sullivan is the whiny twit. This isn't over one article but his whole body of work the last few years. McGrath is the one who will probably be gone first. Sullivan is just a contract writer, I don't think he is a fulltime employee of the Trib.

I think your facts are wrong. It has been reported all day today that the tirade from MacPhail and Hendry was over one article (About Jones). Again I am not a Sullivan fan, I rarely agree with anything he writes, but there is no excuse for what MacPhail and Hendry did especially since they got rid of Mercker and Alou for similar discretions

Do you have more information about this than we do, because we'd love to hear about it. Since Sullivan said it on the radio (according to a post earlier in the thread) that this was over a Jacque Jones article, is there a reason we shouldn't believe that?

Sullivan was on WSCR this morning and said that "Hendry was upset about what he felt was a misquote in the Jones article. MacPhail got personal. I didn't realize he was so upset the stuff I've written during my career."

It's incredibly popular on this board to bash Sullivan and his articles (not that there's anything wrong with that), but the second that Hendry finally has had enough of Sullivan and lets him know about it, everyone suddenly think that it's unacceptable. Fans can slam a writer but a general manager can't?

I'm sure a lot of it has to do with timing. With the Cubs in the middle of an absolutely terrible stretch, I think the prevailing feeling is that Hendry's energies could be better spent on fixing the team than worrying about the papers. But I see your point.
