Can't get reid of Maddox, he is the thing that is puting butts in the seats. He is a money maker.

The seats had plenty of butts when Maddux wasn't here.

the people that have the discretionary income are more likely to see a superstar and spend more at the game than a shcool teacher. If you had a choice of Maddux or Jerome Williams and you had that type of time and income I will save it for the Maddux game

The Cubs are very close to selling out at the beginning of the season each year, at least for the popular dates. People aren't basing that on who the starter is that day, because there's no way to know who will be starting that day that far in advance. I'd say most people are buying tickets based on dates and the opponent rather than the starting pitcher. I think Derrek Lee probably brings in more attendance than Maddux.

the tickets are sold yes, they made their money that way but they are losing a ton if the person decides not to waste their time going because Rusch or Williams is pitching. I refuse to buy tickets now without trying to figure out whos pitching

Don't the Cubs buy up a bunch of their own tickets through their brokers?

They can't be making any money off of inflated ticket prices when there aren't any takers.

If the reports are true, it's actually a fairly small number of tickets, and really just for the big hype games.

My "blow it up" scenerio...

#1 Fire MacPhail, Hendry, and the entire coaching staff

Trade #1

Mets Get: Maddux, Walker, Williamson, Murton

Cubs Get: Milledge, Floyd (Last year of his contract), 1 "B" level prospect

Trade #2

Cubs Get: John Danks, John Mayberry JR

Rangers Get: Kerry Wood (if he agrees), Novoa, Ohman

Trade #3

Cubs Get: Miggy Cabrera, Dan Uggla

Marlins Get: Pie, Mayberry, Danks, Guzman, EPatt, Theriot

Other Moves:

Then trade Pierre and Floyd for cheap bullpen/bench options for 2007. Attempt to get something (anything) for Hairston, Williams, Mabry, Blanco. Cut Neifi, Rusch, and Bynum. If Wade Miller looks good this year resign him to be your #5 starter or bullpen guy/#6 starter.

For 2007 we would have

1B Lee

2B Uggla

SS Cedeno

3B Ramirez

LF Cabrera

CF Milledge

RF Jones

C Barrett

Lineup:

Milledge

Uggla

Lee

Cabrera

Ramirez

Jones

Barrett

Cedeno

#1 Zambrano

#2 Prior

#3

#4 Marshall

#5

Closer - Dempster

RHP - Howry

LHP - Eyre

RHP/6th starter - Wade Miller

RHP -

LHP -

Free Agency:

We would have no farm system left, but 3 of the strating 8 would be cheap and under team control for a while, as would Marshall. With this team you should be able to afford to give Cabrera a monster contract, give a Mulder type player $9-10M to be your #3, and sign a back of the rotation Tomo Ohka type guy to be the #5.

Keep Z, Lee, Marshall, Murton and Cedeno. Replace everything else, even if just for comparable players if that's all you can get. The Cubs need to distance themselves as far as possible from the 2003-2006 era and everything that contributed to its failure.
