Steve Howe died when his truck rolled over today. No article yet, just a flashline on sportsline.com's homepage.

This might sound really callous, and it is, but to be perfectly honest, it's hard to feel too much sympathy for someone who threw so much away like he did. That doesn't mean it's not tragic, but, you kind of have to wonder if there were any drugs or booze involved in the accident...

Hmm... my memory isn't very good as for right now... I keep thinking that this was the guy that managed the A's, until I realized that was Art Howe.

Anyone enlighten me who is Steve Howe? Thanks.

very promising pitcher, played from 80-96 with the Dodgers and Yanks. Former NL ROY and all-star. He was suspended from baseball numerous times for drugs and such, namely cocaine. He missed all of the '84, '86 and 88-90 seasons because of drugs.

It is, but it's honestly how I feel. I prefer to be honest over politically correct.

yeah, only a soft PC weiner would restrain from taking a few potshots at a guy who just died.

Weiner? That's pretty callous.

I remember Big Stein bringing Howe back several times in the late 80s and early 90s. Say what you will about him, King George has attempted to rehab several people with substance abuse issues. Off hand: Howe, Billy Martin, Strawberry, Gooden, Dale Berra.

I don't think it is callous, it is just a reflection on those that express that kind of sentiment after someone's death.

Just for the record...I never implied I was in the least bit enlightened by the news...just that I wasn't going to be to sorry for him. His family, yes, but him, no.

I got to know Steve Howe a little bit when I worked in minor league baseball in the early 90's. I worked in the California League in Reno, Nevada, and he pitched for Salinas. Reno and Salinas were both without affiliates, and we often had ex-major league players who were trying to make comebacks.

Steve wanted to pitch for us, but we thought the temptations of Reno would be too great so we passed. After he joined Salinas though, he would always stop by the office to see how we were doing. He always remembered my name and was really a very friendly guy.

But, make no mistake, he had his demons. He was honest about his failings and worked hard to overcome them. I don't know if he ever did. He was definitely a Type-A personality. He was very passionate about everything he did. He bacame a born-again Christian when I knew him and he would lead the Salinas chapel services. He would pound his fist in his hand and preach in an old fashioned fire-and-brimstone manner. He did everything at 100 mph.

He did waste his talent. He admitted that. And, I wouldn't be shocked to hear that he never did beat his demons. But, he was a nice guy, and I'm sorry to hear the news.

Ummm....do you not feel sorry for Kurt Kobain or Jim Morrison either? Lots of people do drugs. I don't get why how a person decided to treat themselves should have any weight on how you feel about their death. Its not like he hurt anyone else

No, I don't feel sorry for them. It's not like I'm ridiculing anyone or taking pleasure in their demise, but when someone attains something millions of others only dream, and work incredibly hard to get but never do, and these guys subsequently throw it away like it's nothing. I'm not going to feel sorry for them. Don't twist it so it's like I'm taking some perverse pleasure in hearing their fate, not feeling sorry for someone in their time of (self-caused) anguish doesn't always translate to enjoying their downfalls.

In Steve Howe's case, maybe it's a little bit of jealousy on my part. How many people would have given their first born to have what he blatantly threw away?

Either way, I'm not going to apologize for being honest.

Do you know he never hurt anyone else? Substace abusers typically leave a pretty big wake of destruction in the lives of people around them. By all accounts Howe more than dabbled so I'll jump to the conclusion that his wake was sizable. I certainly feel less sorry him and those you mention above than some others who have passed. Nonetheless it is still terribly unfortunate.

One car accidents make me wonder, especially by guys with troubled pasts. I hope he wasn't having recent troubles.

Pure speculation, but I think sleep deprivation may have been behind the accident given the time and location. It's hard to stay awake driving through the deserts in CA in the day time...
