Wow

That was pretty much my reaction...I've seen umps get spit on, shoved or pushed a little, even seen a few pitches taken off of the face mask I thought were intentional. Never seen anything close to a bat getting tossed at an ump though.

I think he will get a nice summer vacation out of it.

Durham, N.C. has struck yet again. Are they opening Oblivion gates down there or something?

When Young delayed leaving the batter's box, the umpire ejected him. Young then flipped his bat underhand. It sailed end over end and hit the umpire in the chest.

I can't envision at all in my head what this looks like.

I wonder what the suspension is for an incident like this.

This is one of those times where being a superstar helps. "Random Bench Spaz throwing bat at umpire" would result in probably a blacklist from the game. But "Potential future AL all-star Delmon Young" will get a big suspension and fine, but will play again.

An underhand flip doesn't sound as bad. I was imagining him rearing back and throwing his bat at the ump with all his might.

That's what I was thinking. I have no idea if this is the case, but I've seen a few times where a player would flip his bat, with the intention of catching it, after being rung up. I wonder if that's what Delmon tried to do, but it slipped or whatever.

I have no idea though, to be honest.

I don't know much about the minor leagues. Who is Delmon Young?

D-Rays top prospect, and one of the top propsects in all of baseball. People are talking multiple all-star appearences for this kid.

And I don't know if there will be a video. It's a minor league game, where not everything is telecast. The best we could hope for is a shaky video camera shot.

According to Baseball America, he's THE top prospect in all of baseball. Numero uno. The top dog. The big cheese. [/Airplane reference]

I'm sorry, but Delmon shouldn't just face a suspension, he should FACE criminal charges. Tossing a bat at another person, is assault, plain and simple. If McSorely could face criminal charges after slammin' his stick into Brashear, and if Bertuzzi could face criminal charges for sucker punching Moore of Colorado, then Delmon should face criminal charges for throwing his bat, INTENTIONALLY at the umpire.

Baseball should not award Young, with a suspension, or should I say paid vacation, Young should be awarded time in jailhouse. This is uncall for.

Without having seen the video, it's hard to say what I think the punishment should be, but given that it was an underhanded flip and probably not on purpose, I'd say just give him a long summer vacation.

He wouldn't be getting a paid vacation. Undoubtedly, the suspension would be without pay. And whether they choose to do so or not, the Devil Rays organization could penalize him beyond what baseball does.

Still no video?

I didn't have the credential to have an opportunity to interview Delmon in 2005, but it's a toss up when you ask guys about him. A popular line I recall reading was that his attitude is already ready for the Major Leagues. It'll be interesting to see how this is handled.

He's not going to jail for fipping his bat underhanded and hitting an umpire (who, btw, was wearing a chest protector). Nor should he. If you or I were playing a rec game and did the same thing, we wouldn't be jailed, nor should we.

This isn't nearly as bad as the two hockey incidents you mentioned. If he had hauled off and whacked the ump with a swing of the bat - that's another thing. But this was minor compared to those two things. It was stupid on his part and he'll get a suspension, but jail? Seriously?
