I think the problem a lot of people have with this board is that the ones that disagree are usually banned. Banned even for petty things. I might get banned for saying this. If I never post on here again, then you'll know I got banned. For this. This harmless paragraph. I'm prepared, though. Don't cry for me. I'll be ok. There are other boards than this one. When you speak of me, fellas, speak well.

People never get banned for disagreeing. They get banned for acting like idiots.

In your opinion, should Gunned get banned for the post he made?

Did he? Seems harsh if so.

Gunned got what he deserved, KurtEvans. Go photoshop something and LEAVE US ALONE!

Adam Dunn only eats meat that's died of natural causes because he doesn't wanna hurt any of God's creatures. That's documented, people.

See now you're not discussing anything, you're just mocking the board as a whole, some of whom really don't care for Adam Dunn.

You're right. I'm sorry. I'll be good. MIZZOU fans usually have a better sense of humor, though. I'm gonna go read the member guidelines right now. My nonsense ends HERE. Seriously.

If people let it go, viewing it as a Cubs fan venting, the original topic will probably take over. But when people respond to those 1 or 2 comments about Neifi (or whatever side issue) by saying how stupid it is to bring that up and how some people can never be happy and always have to crap in other people's cereal bowls, then that is when the thread is going to disintigrate.

of course it never works the other way around. people that hate Neifi always just let it go when someone says a complimentary word about him.

But do they talk about Neifi, or do they talk about the person who wrote something positive about Neifi? That's the point. If you say something positive about Neifi, I'm going to point out the negatives, because by and large, he's a negative to this team. I'm not going to call you out for saying something positive, or say you should shut up and stop talking positively about Neifi. I'm going to address the Cubs related topic, which is the point of a Cubs related message board.

With all due respect, there have been a bunch of stupid inappropriate comments in this thread. If you don't like things on this board, there's an easy solution. I'm so sick of this BS. What's the point of a message board if everyone agrees and is kissing each other's butts?

It makes no sense to me that people can have such lack of appreciation and respect for the man who built the best Cubs community on the web all by himself, and the moderators who work to keep this site clean FOR FREE. To suggest that people get banned for disagreeing is completely disrespectful of everything this site was built on and all the hard work everyone who has contributed their free time to this community.

Is it so you can go to Cards talk or some other borad and say you got in trouble here?

There are clearly two factions within the board: those who lean towards rationalism (and thus criticism of the Cubs organizatio), and those who don't (and tend not to criticize as much).

I

Woah woah. Are you saying those that criticise the Cubs organizations are rational and those that don't are irrational?

I think he/she means rational in the philosophical sense. It is a clash of world views.

Exactly.

I do not have a philosophy background either, but as far as my limited knowledge brings me, you are still saying that those who are critical of the Cubs organization are the only ones being rational and those that don't criticize, are unreasoned drones. nonsense.

No.

A rationalist beleives there is more to something than what one can get through their senses (see, hear, touch, taste or smell). You could call these people "anti-stat" or "pro-chemistry" or "pro-speed kills" if you like.

An emperists believes almost the opposite.

But I would say that Caryatid has it backwards in some respects.

I would say it's very difficult to interpret tone in a post, and people shouldn't just assume condescension or patronization by the words. Sometimes if you try real hard to make the words as peaceful as possible, those can read as patronizing. There's a distinction between calling out a poster and "in essense" calling out a poster, which might not even be happening at all.

But that's the opposite of the correllation Caryatid was making. Not that I think he's saying people are mindless drones, but it seems someone has the words mixed up(hint: it's probably me).

I agree. I put an edit in the above post.

I don't think it is a black and white case though.

Anyway. This has been an interesting topic. I sent Gunned a private message and it didn't bounce, so I assume he's not been banned and just hasn't responded.

Did you not learn anything from this thread?

...yeah, I've uh, had a long day. I fixed it.

good original post that started this thread.

One of the bad things about the net is it brings out the whiners and complainers. So many people here are baseball experts who should be GM's. It does get hard to take now and then.

Actually, I was simply using the term in which James, Neyer, et. al. refer to themselves. That's all. There was no hidden agenda there.

Ok, this has been a weird thread, but...

1) This is a fantastic board. Yes, once in a while there's too much complaining. But as has been said before and will be said again, it's a message board and there's likely to be a lot more disagreement about a comment like "Jones sucks" than there is about "what a great 2 out hit by Murton".

2) The only person that's been banned since I've been here that one could even begin to make a case for keeping is the one that insulted Wrigley and said Miller was better, and even then, you don't do that on your first posts on a new board.

3) Yes, the posters that have been here longer probably have a longer leash. For instance there is one particular one that insulted a mod in a game thread today and probably would've been banned had he been new. But if you've built up a long track record of being a pretty good poster, of course you're going to get more chances than someone who just shows up and starts trashing people that same day. And rightfully so.

4) The best way to not get into a flame war is to not assume much if anything. If you are not certain of what someone meant by a post, ask. And if you are angry about a post, then explain why and don't use personal attacks or name calling. I'd say well over 75 percent of the flame wars on this board start when one poster goes over the top and insults another one during an argument when they simply could have explained their position better.

That's all.
