Any of Wieters, Vitters, or Heyward would be fine by me... and I'd probably be able to live with Moustakas. I am really hesitant to grab an arm that early, though... unless Price slips, of course.

Why so cold on Moustakas?

I wouldn't quite say I'm cold on him, as I'd be okay with him at #3, but he doesn't seem to have the upside of Heyward or the low risk of Wieters. While Vitters is the same way, I think he comes closer in the risk category than Moustakas.

Heyward also appears to have a better command of the strike zone than Vitters or Moustakas (but it's always tough to tell with those HS kids).

if you want upside go with burgess.

If memory serves, Burgess is expected to have pretty high contract demands. I don't expect him to fall to us in the supplemental round, but I wouldn't be shocked out of my pants.

All you Vitters haters had better back the F off when he's actually in the system. You know they'll all come out in droves once whoever is selected.

A lot of people were pretty pissed when Colvin was taken, but I have yet to see the anti-Colvin bandwagon in the Minor League forum this year.

count me in. I don't believe he'll be a productive major league ballplayer.

I don't think he sees enough pitches to be more than a solid fourth outfielder.

Neither does Alex Rios.

Alex Rios saw 3.90 P/PA in 2006, and is at 3.71 in 2007.

Cliff Floyd, 3.53 and 3.46

Jacque Jones, 3.65 and 3.64

Matt Murton, 3.71 and 3.71

Alex Rios sees more than enough pitches.

I can't wait for this sequence of events:

1. With Wieters available, the Cubs select future AA flame out Josh Vitters

AA flame out? Yeh right.

Not that Sickels is a god, but...

Trying to think of some comps here....Best Case : Chipper Jones without the steals early in his career.. Medium Case: Mike Cuddyer. Worst Case: hmm....someone who gets injured or tops out as a Triple-A slugger.

Worst case is a AAA flameout...by a guy who isn't in love with Vitters at all.

I'm sure people didn't think Montanez and Harvey (top 10 picks) would be complete busts either.

Come on, doesn't this just have all the signs of a bust?

-Cubs history of drafting high school hitters - not good

-Vitters isn't known for having particularly strong plate discipline

-Cubs pass up a low-risk position player with good patience

I love that the defense of AA flameout label is that he'll flame out in AAA.

If best case = Larry then I'm guessing we'll find out really soon, as Chipper was a pretty productive near 1:1 K:BB guy coming out of the gate.

Wilken is pretty much 50/50 historically on taking college/HS players. He doesn't have issues identifying HS players with talent. He's the one signing off on the pick, not the dopes in the past. It's a huge difference.

Wells, Young, Rios (that pick was very much against popular choice), Hudson, Gibbons, the list is long and distinguished. He also wanted Nomar, but was overruled. That worked out well.

Rios wasn't known for his plate discipline either.

Low risk? Catching with that big of a body is going to wear on the knees. Once those go, so does a lot of your power. He's not "low risk." I like Wieters, but he's not the best player available at 3, especially with his monetary/contract demands. He's not Gordon or Tex. Paying out the backside for him is silly. We can better use that money in the later rounds going over slot.

incorrect. if he falls it could be an issue. hes not deemed unsignable or anything. it's not that big of a deal.

I emailed Jim Callis of Baseball America to ask him what he thought about Jarrod Parker. Below is my email and his response

My Email:

I am wondering how he stacks up against Rick Porcello? He's been a guy moving up the charts at BA quite quickly to where he's #9 now and I believe you have him ranked as the #2 HS arm ahead of the others in what is a pretty strong HS crop. I've heard from both BA and others that he's a right handed Scott Kazmir. It's hard as I know to really tell how a HS pitcher is going to develope but, is that a good comparrison? Any chance Parker goes to college? I have read that his secondary pitches are hard to grade. I am wondering if he's going to be the HS version of Mike Pelfrey who's fastball is great but, his other pitches are almost non-existant. How would you compare him to Kershaw?

Jim Callis:

Pretty comparable, Nathan. Porcello has a bigger body, but Parker's stuff has been just a bit better this year. Parker has a very good slider and a promising changeup. Better pure stuff than Kershaw, but not lefthanded.

i dunno who was picking for the cubs but for the annual sickels mock the cubs ended up with

1-3) Rick Porcello

1S-48) Yasmani Grandal

3-97) Zack Cozart

4-127) John Ely

5-157) Stephen Porlier

I dont care for the Grandal pick with others available. We could use a catcher, but meh. I dislike the Cozart pick. Cameron Rupp was avail at the time and is a better hitting catcher than Grandal imo. Elys decent I guess. Stephen Porlier at that pick wouldnt be bad. Ill take it.

Ive toyed with the idea of a mock running through three round or so, to give an idea on who could be there for the third round pick.

Q: Matt from Glen Ellyn, IL asks: Who do you think the Cubs are targeting with their 1st round selection?

A: Alan Matthews: Wieters or Parker.

so basically BA has no idea who the cubs want with that pick

...yay?

I'm not getting my hopes up, despite this answer. It's the Cubs, I know they're going to screw the pick up.
