Say that Price and/or Wieters are still available at the #3 pick... are there people who advocate not selecting the one who is still there (or either, if both are still available) and going in another direction?

I'm nervous that the Royals will take Wieters, as John Buck is hardly a stud catcher. And I'm not sure that I'd take Brackman at #3.

Moore will take BPA, if the Royals feel Wieters is the BPA, they'll take him. There's always the chance that Wieters can't stick at C in the pros.

I'd take Price or Wieters without hesitation if either was available.

Wow, 6 runs on 8 baserunners when there's only one double as an extra base hit? Sounds like he had the same thing happen today as Carlos. He must have been about perfect until one big inning.

He gave up one baserunner, a walk, in the first five innings. He gave up two runs in the sixth. He gave up one run in the seventh and left with the bases loaded. All three runners scored.

I am telling you I think the Royals go pitcher. Dayton Moore has been trying to stockpile arms from day one. I think Matt is ours if we want him.

Mike (Norhtboro, MA): Jim, where do you see David Price and Weiters going in the draft? Think the Cubbies would take the catcher?

Jim Callis: As much as you can be a lock seven weeks before the draft, Price seems a lock to be the No. 1 pick of the Devil Rays. Wieters figures to go No. 2 to the Royals or No. 3 to the Cubs.

John (D.C.): Jim, you're a GM. Give me your top 5 draft prospects taking everything into consideration such as upside, makeup, MLB readiness, and signability..

Jim Callis: My gut feel Top 5, and I'm not going to worry about signability: David Price, Josh Vitters, Matt Wieters, Ross Detwiler and Matt Harvey just barely over Rick Porcello.

ML (Asheville): Brackman- big star, big leaguer, or big bust?

Jim Callis: He's been very inconsistent this spring. Opinions run the gamut, from a 7-foot monster capable of dominating hitters as a starter to a guy who might have to be a reliever. Huge ceiling, but there's some risk there.

Mike (Chicago): If you are the Cubs, and Price and Weiters are gone, who do you take at 3?

Jim Callis: I'd take Josh Vitters. My guess is they'd go for Brackman.

Todd Morgan / Scout.com Mock Draft[/url]"]3. Chicago Cubs - Matt Wieters, C, S-R, 6’4, 205, Georgia Tech

The word in scouting circles is that the Cubs are leaning hard toward taking Wieters, a switch-hitting masher who has the bat to play first if he can’t stay behind the plate.

What are the draft guru's thoughts on former Cubs draftee and current Florida Gator 1B Matt LaPorta?

He had an injury plagued season last year, but he's rebounded nicely so far hitting:

.435/.586/.878 with 16 HR 11K 32BB 17(!)HBP in 131Ab. (.394 BABIP)

He's second in the nation in OBP and SLG, third in HR, and is leading the nation in OPS.

I know he was considered one of the top 15 or so prospects in the nation before last season's struggles, but what round do you see him falling to this year? Can he sneak back into the first round?

Posted
That .394 BABIP is absolutely insane. I saw him awhile back in their series against A&M and still do really like him. He should go in the sandwich round, if not higher.

Could he be there for the Cubs supplemental pick? Do they still have one?

We do have one but it dropped from the 1st supp to more towards the bottom.

i'm really hoping Wieters falls to us. Must convince KC they want Brackman.

Actually, in the mock draft I linked, the Royals took HS RHP Rick Porcello. Andrew Brackman fell all the way to 10 at the Giants:

1. Tampa Bay Devil Rays - David Price, LHP, B:L T:L, 6’5, 215, Vanderbilt

Price has done nothing to alter the preseason perception that he is the best pitcher in the draft. Tampa Bay, meet Mr. David Price.

2. Kansas City Royals - Rick Porcello, RHP, R-R, 6’5, 190, Seton Hall Prep, West Orange, NJ

Porcello’s size, stuff and projection are becoming more and more attractive as he piles up stellar performances for the nation’s number one prep team.

...

10. San Francisco Giants - Andrew Brackman, RHP, 7’0, 250, North Carolina State

Fast start but now coming back to Earth. His stuff is nasty which will keep him in the Top 10. But how long will it take him to get his huge body under control and develop consistent mechanics?

I want Wieters at #3 and LaPorta in the supplemental.

That'd make me happy. :D

We'd have a ton of organizational power at 1B with Dopirak, Fox, LaPorta, and Wieters possibly all playing there.
