they're grown men, who get paid more than their managers and gm's.

That doesn't mean a thing

tell that to joe torre.

pro athletes can't be managed like a bunch of employees at microsoft.

I'm willing to bet microsoft makes every effort to keep their employees from getting hurt at work. Seeing as pro athletes are much larger investments to their teams, they should be managed accordingly. When you are paying someone millions of dollars of guaranteed money for several years, you decide how to best use their services to win games. Hendry did and he clearly made a big mistake. Wood's opinion is irrelevant.

Cub doctors said he couldn't get hurt any further.

Also, the opinion of the highest paid player on the team shouldn't be irrelevant.

I thought he was using humor to point out the ridiculousness of CubfaninCA assertion that just because a player gets paid more, means he should get to decide what he does, even though the franchise invests the money in him and should call all shots that might affect his future health and well being.

whether or not he could get hurt any further is not the issue. the issue is that letting him pitch could delay his '06 debut. and it did.

come on.

No, they said his shoulder wouldn't get hurt any further - he could have hurt something else due to changing his mechanics. But that isn't the point anyway - the point is wood starting this april and may would have been worth more to the team than pitching out of the pen in August of last year. The Cubs should have made a better judgement of the situation and shut Wood down earlier. I don't think the point is even arguable that this was a mistake. the Cubs got nothing out of his bullpen pitching and his absence has unquestionably hurt the club this year.

stooping to the level of a troll is trolling in my opinion.

Pretty convienient caveat. Is that when ever you decide the situation applies?

There's truth to that - abusing Beckett to win the world series was probably a good decision for the marlins. Using wood out of the pen was a bad decision.

if bartman doesn't screw the cubs, then it's a bad decision. gotta gamble sometimes. the cubs gambled away the first month of april 2006. at least we're seeing marshall, guzman and hill. :)

He was bad in Texas but who isn't? He's a pretty talented pitcher who is emerging.

I don't think its a bad move even if Florida loses - you don't get to that position often particularly when you sell off your entire team every few years. It gave the Marlins a chance to win it all. Using wood last year in the pen did not give the cubs a chance to win anything.

Baseball's a situational game. An authoritative approach is unwise, especially when you're dealing with multi-millionaires who can leave you for the Yankees, Red Sox or Dodgers.

If the logic is that someone who makes more knows more, I'm in bad shape

that's not the logic at all. you definitely don't want to dictate to them tho.

so the 'he who makes more $, gets to make the decision' rule only applies 1) when it involves shutting down a pitcher for the season 2) the player is the highest paid guy on the team 3) the player doesn't suck 4) and, of course, 'depends on the situation.'

The point that seems to escape most discussing how best to play the game. You can apply rules to the long-term, but baseball is a situational game. Unfortunately, Cubs management doesn't get how this works.

People are in leadership/management positions for a reason. If the organization allowed Wood to assess and decide for himself last year, I'm concerned for the organization. I'd much rather have a player be mad and sit than a player get worse and waste even more salary. Fires are better off prevented.

This isn't a case of who makes more at the office, this is the case of the guy writing the checks getting to make the decisions, even if his employees make more than him. Its quite simple - he who writes the checks makes the rules.

Well, I think Wood wanted to help his teammates make a run. You have guys like Lee, Walker, Nomar, ARam, Prior, Z, Maddux, and Dempster, who all have made the playoffs recently, and there's only so many chances to make the playoffs. It seems Wood's implying he would have let his teammates down by packing it in. I don't think many of these guys wanted to give up in early August. This has to be taken into consideration as well. Management telling Wood to pack it in in early August could have really ticked off some teammates.
