simply - shutting wood down would have sent a bad message to his teammates, to wood, and to fans.

of course, self-proclaimed smart fans are another story. :)

normally, i would wonder why comments like this don't get you banned. but then you say stuff like...

i'm the one explaining how baseball really works and not playing devil advocate with fantasy scenarios.

...and i realize that comedy like that just can't be replaced.

Wood must be a lunatic.

Q: Do you wish you would have had that surgery sooner than August 31?

A: No, no. That’s looking back and nobody asked me that question when I was doing it. Everybody wants to ask me that question now that we’re a month into the season. If I bail out in August or early August of last year, then I get ridiculed for giving up on the team. I made the right decision. We went as long as we could with it and I did what I could to help the team.

No, nice try though.

Wood is a competitor. If he DIDN'T say the above, I would be shocked. Whether or not he's shut down though shouldn't be in his hands.

That is Lunacy if Hendry listened to Wood on when he should be shut down.

Play again though.

Maybe I'm reading that wrong, but I have a hard time believing that nobody brought up the idea of surgery in that stretch run. I know it was discussed here.

yes, lets change the subject now after you realize you misunderstood the question, "Do you wish you would have had that surgery sooner than August 31?"

nice devil advocate label tho. pot meet kettle.

thanx for doing the interview kerry. :)

man, you're obnoxious.

i did misunderstand the question. but that doesn't change the fact that wood should not be the guy who decides when he has surgery. frankly, i don't care what wood said. his comment proves nothing that you've said throughout this entire thread. quit acting like it proves you right or something.

They probably did, but it appears they gave Kerry & his teammates lots of discretion.

Which if true, is total and complete idiocy.

not sure if i'd rather be labeled obnoxious or a devil advocate. lol

there was no reason for the, "welp, guess you'll have to find something else to be a devil advocate about."

Funny. No mention has been made of Jim Hendry's proclamation that it wouldn't matter when Woody's surgery was, because he'd be ready by opening day. I suppose we shouldn't hold Hendry to those comments because he was just relying on Wood and the doctors.

Its ridiculous. Hendry obviously was either relying on bad information (for which he ought not be absolved as its his job to get the right information) or he was outright lying. Neither trait is particularly appealing.

Arguing that all of this is 20/20 hindsight is absolutely, 100% bullcrap. There were plenty of posters expressing their exasperation at the way Wood was handled and the futility of pushing back his surgery when it was happening. Those opinions were bouyied, in part, by stories from board members about their recovery times from shoulder surgery. While those accounts may not be from elite athletes, they certainly are relevant.

The decision to delay Wood's surgery is indefensible, pure and simple. It is clear, by Hendry's own comments, that he failed to have a grasp on Wood's recovery. That alone is grounds for his dismissal, IMO.

If guys make their own decisions, why have a trainer?

am pretty sure wood based his decision on doctors saying he couldn't injure himself any further.

ballplayers need medical specialists to make informed decisions.

You truly believe that ballplayers should decide even with informed decisions upon when they should be shut down?

You CAN'T be serious.

depends on the situation. they're grown men, who get paid more than their managers and gm's. if the cubs are 20 out of the wildcard in early august, of course management intervenes and shuts him down, but they weren't.

when did the organization admit his return would be in may? i thought it was pretty early on. perhaps my recollection isn't right tho.

what are you right about - that wood wanted to keep pitching? so what? Putting him in the pen was still a bad idea. Now, you've stated your opinion and I've stated mine - if you are here to discuss make a point - if you are here just to get under people's skin - then you are a troll.

I think you both need to stop the personal attacks.

The GM should be a good enough judge of the situation to realize they were not in contention and that having Wood pitch in the pen would not make them a contender. This is just another example of poor judgement by Jim Hendry.

That doesn't mean a thing

tell that to joe torre.

pro athletes can't be managed like a bunch of employees at microsoft.

I'm willing to bet microsoft makes every effort to keep their employees from getting hurt at work. Seeing as pro athletes are much larger investments to their teams, they should be managed accordingly. When you are paying someone millions of dollars of guaranteed money for several years, you decide how to best use their services to win games. Hendry did and he clearly made a big mistake. Wood's opinion is irrelevant.
