BACK ON TRACK: Kerry Wood threw on the side Sunday in Arizona. If he suffered no physical setbacks, Wood is pointing toward a game Wednesday with the Mesa Cubs in the Arizona rookie league.

Wood will leave Arizona today to attend a memorial service for former Cubs pitching coach Oscar Acosta. They developed a close relationship when Acosta was in Chicago in 2000 and '01. Acosta, who worked for the New York Yankees, was killed in a car accident last week in the Dominican Republic.

Mark Prior, meanwhile, had a long-toss session Sunday and will throw on the side today. Prior should be back with the Cubs sometime in May, ahead of Wade Miller, who is on the 60-day disabled list until June 1

So all that crap about none of them being back until June was just that... Crap?

I believe it was Paul Sullivan that said none of them would return until June (while everyone else in the media and associated with the team is pointing to May for Prior and Wood).

I don't believe sullivan ever wrote that. Maybe he said it on the radio, but not in print.

Here's what Sullivan had to write about Prior's return:

Trib

Mark Prior, who is third in line behind Wood and Miller in the pitching rehab lane, threw 25 pitches of batting practice Friday. The Cubs have not mapped out a plan for Prior's return, but it's unlikely to be before the start of June.

I don't believe Sullivan. I think Prior will be back my mid May just based on what Hendry and others have mentioned. Miller will be the last to return from the DL.

I don't believe him either. I think he's a hack who should be doing the White Sox beat and not the Cubs.

I agree. He's throwing 55 pitches to batters tomorrow. As long as there are no setbacks I expect him before June.

Did anyone else start getting excited when they read about how close Wood is?

Should I get that excited or Am I a fool and is my man love for Wood just that overpowering?

Fool me once shame on you, fool me 100 times shame on me....

I wonder how many pitches he'll throw today. If it's under 65 or 60, I'd be surprised if he didn't have two rehab starts instead of just one.

According to this article by Miles, Wood could be close to returning.

Righty Kerry Wood (shoulder and knee) will pitch in an Arizona rookie-league game today. He may need one more minor-league outing after that before the Cubs consider activating him.

That is great news if it is accurate....here's hoping

Having Kerry back for the start of May would be a shot in the arm..

I wanna see big #34 on the hill...

ChicagoSports.com[/url]"]Kerry Wood threw 39 pitches in a three-inning simulated game against rookie-leaguers on Wednesday, allowing one hit with one walk and five strikeouts. Wood said he felt fine afterward, the Cubs reported.

Hopefully this means a rehab start on the 1st, though at 39 pitches, I'd imagine he'd need two.

I'm surprized it's taking Wood this long considering he only stopped throwing for a week after knee srugery.

He was slated for an end of April start before the knee injury - it's only pushed back a week or week and half it seems....

Per Will Carroll at BP:
Wood threw 39 pitches in a three-inning stint in Arizona giving up just one hit, striking out five and walking one. That’s not only good, it’s efficient. Doing that against Rookie Leaguers isn't the same as doing it against major leaguers, but it’s certainly a promising start. It’s clear now that the setback Wood had was minor and that he is now ready for his first rehab start. Expect Wood to head to Double-A West Tenn sometime early next week to make the first of two rehab starts. If all goes to plan, Wood should be back in Chicago around May 12th.

Why isn't he going to Iowa?

I'm guessing he probably will for the 2nd rehab start...but I'm bad with figuring this stuff out... :P

Looks like Nashville. Not really a long trip if he's already gonna be doing a rehab start with the Jaxx.

Is there any chance of Wood rehabbing with the Jaxx when they visit the Missisippi Braves May 7-10?

If he's expected back with the cubs around the 12th I'd say a May 1st and May 6th Rehab Start....

Well, Sheets made his first rehab start in Mississippi...so it could happen.

I'm planning on being at that game on the 7th, so it would be cool if he's there.

I saw Bruce lurking, maybe he has some ideas of where/when Woody is headed? And good luck Vance! Have you gotten Woody's autograph? If so, what's he like in person?

I've gotten Wood before, but without much interaction.

I just laughed out loud.
