It looks like Greg Maddux is gonna get his 3rd win. He has been so efficient, so far tonite. Only 87 pitches through 8, 3 hits and only 1 run (ER). How bout the 6 K's too, not bad for a groundball pitcher. He movement has been excellent and it truly seems he is getting better with age.

BTW- Len just mentioned Daily Herald beat writer Bruce Miles birthday is today.

I was going to start a new thread on this, I can't believe there is only one post on this subject, outside of the game thread.

Kudos to Maddux, it was such a pleasure to watch him pitch last night. It was also great to hear Vin Scully call the game and listen to the accolades he heaped on Maddux also.

Obviously 3 games does not a season make but...

As happy as i am about what he's doing for the team in the absence of a true ace thus far, I'm even more happy for the guy himself. When the Cubs spit the bit towards the end of last season, getting Maddux to 15 wins was one of the few things worth rooting for. I hated to see that streak end, and really didn't think we'd see much more out of him.

But when I allow myself to think big, a Cubs division title coinciding with a Maddux resurgence would just be poetic beauty.

Im not even talking about the rest of the season, or his previous two games. Just last night by itself was just an awesome game to watch.

Ah. Yes, an amazing performance. He had one strikeout on (I think) Navarro that was just nasty. And I also give him bonus points for not keeping me up too late on a week night.

It was the first time in a long time I'd sat down and watched a full game Scully worked. It was truly a joy. He's amazing. What's really impressive is that he does it all by himself....and if you weren't specifically listening to hear a 2nd guy you'd never miss him.

I had two favorite lines he had last night.

"Maddux is like a diamond cutter, every pitch is so precise"

And...

"Furcal reaches out to bunt and leaves that one in Barrett's glove"

He's just damn good.

Yeah, I love the fact he is in the booth by himself. You don't get any of that inane chatter that you are bound to get with a two man booth

I just sat there with my wife last night and could not wait for the next person to come up to bat to see what new information that he would give regarding our players. He was so informative. I didn't realize that Murton won all those home run challenges. he simply has information about everyone - and a great storyteller.

How about the one when Lee was like 11 and went to a baseball camp and the person running the camp was Dusty Baker. That was funny.

Scully was completely incredible...

What are you talking about? Barrett was catching last night. Everybody knows that Barrett is such a terrible catcher that none of our pitchers can pitch to him. What exactly are you trying to pull here?

I was at last nights game and was the first time I've gotten a chance to see Maddux in person. He controlled the whole flow of the game and the word I used last night was "mesmerizing". Simply a great experience. Here's a good article from the LA Times, and the writer uses the same kind of analogy and called him a hypnotist.

What kind of year would Maddux need to have to get an offer from the Cubs again? 1 year, 5 million?

If he wins 15 + games I'd be fine with him on a 1 year deal in the 5-7 million range. Especially if it means we trade excess pitching for a real, productive, right fielder.

It was the 8th inning. Maddux totally schooled the rookie on 3 pitches. None of them were hittable. The first pitch was a curve that struck the center of the plate. The 2nd one was on the inside corner. Navarro was leaning on that pitch, making it unhittable. The 3rd pitch looked like it was originally going to hit Navarro, but it cut back over the strike zone leaving Navarro hapless. Navarro didn't swing at any of them.

I am so glad I taped last night's game. It was Maddux at his finest.

Lol, it was just sarcasm for all the people who say that our Pitcher's ERA's have been higher than expected the past 2 years because Barrett has been catching

What are you talking about? Everyone knows Maddux blows in the 1st half of the season.

Can't wait until the 2nd half of the season and Blanco is catching for him.

Correction. He is the ace of the staff until someone else can prove otherwise.

Let's hope Greggy is going with the Moises Alou approach to signing a 3 year contract with the Cubs past your prime. He did the "I guess I should work out this offseason" thing, so maybe he'll have a great season.

Maybe there was a little "Dusty thinks this is my last year, I'll show him" mixed in there as well.
