I live about 20 minutes from the Sacramento Rivercats stadium and the Iowa Cubs are supposed to come to Sacramento May 22 - May 25 and I was wondering about minor league rehab starts. Does it matter where the minor league teams are playing when the MLB team chooses where the rehab assignments are (i.e. preferring that the players start games in certain places not too far from Chicago) or does that not matter. Because based on the tentative schedule it's possible that either Prior or Wood could be making rehab starts around that time and I would really love to go see them. I'm going to go to one or two of the games anyway just to see our young guys, but I'm wondering if it's possible that either Prior or Wood could make a start there if that is how their rehab is set up?

Note: I am not saying I expect either of them to make those starts and by no means am I trying to set a timetable for their return. I would never try to jinx them like that. I'm wondering about how teams do their rehab assignments.

It looks like Wood could be making his first rehab start on April 25th, not May, if all continues to go well.

According to his current schedule, Wood will throw a simulated game to live hitters on Saturday the 15th with one more likely to happen on Thursday the 20th before being sent out for a rehab start. Iowa will be at home against Round Rock on the 25th, the likely day of his first rehab start, so he may go someplace warmer. Daytona will be at home on that day. West Tenn will be at Chattanooga. Those are the two most likely possibilities if the Cubs want Wood to pitch in relatively warm weather.

As far as Prior is concerned, it is still too early to tell. He pitched 40 pitches off a mound in Mesa on Friday and is scheduled to pitch another 45-50 pitches on Monday if his shoulder responds well on the off days. At this point, Prior and Miller are on similar timelines which are about 3-4 weeks behind Wood. However, their bodies will determine whether they stay that far behind him or not.

My guess is that you might see Prior or Miller, but that Wood will be back with Cubs by May 22-25.

I think it's pretty rare for major league pitchers--especially high profile starters like Mark Prior and Kerry Wood--to make minor league rehab starts on the road. Making home starts give the affiliates a chance to fill the ballpark. There was a huge turnout last year in Peoria for a Prior rehab start.

I think it all depends. I know that Sheets made both of his rehab starts for the Brewers with farm teams that were on the road. The first was in Jackson, Mississippi on the road for the AA team. The second was in Iowa on the road for the Brewers AAA team. I think it depends on the team and the situation.

Wood should be through with his rehab by then, but there is a chance you could see Prior or Miller.

Maybe you'll get a chance to see Rusch by then as well. :)

Kerry's 2nd rehab start last season was at Nashville.

And his first start was in Jackson. I did say it was pretty rare. But that also means that making a road start is not out of the question. Wood has to go with what the team's schedule dictates. So if he's told to make a second rehab start and it's on the road, he'll have to do it.

But again, major league teams will try their hardest to get a home start for one of their affiliates. It's their little way of throwing them a bone.

Its 75 and sunny here right now, and the Apr 25th game is a noon start. :P

I think I'll get tickets monday morning. If I get to see Kerry, great, if not, I still get to skip work and go to a game.

Oh god I hope not. Not that I wouldn't want to see Rusch off the Major League team, I just don't want to see him pitch.

since they are in arizona, sacramento is no more inconvenient than des moines. of course, it would have to stop raining there first.

It stopped raining for yesterday's home opener.

Like I said, I want to go see a game anyway just to see how our minor leaguers look but it would be nice to get to see Prior making a rehab start.
