Didn't see this discussed much, but I really was impressed by Marshall. The line wasn't that great, but it is misleading. He got squeezed on the low strike in the 1st inning which directly contributed to that HR from Rolen. If he starts getting that low strike called, and they were strikes, he could be a very effective pitcher for the Cubs.

The kid throws strikes, keeps the ball down and has a great makeup. Kind of reminds me of when Greg Maddux first came up. I'm not saying Marshall will have a career like Maddog, but I can't remember too many Cubs pitchers with that kind of makeup. Juan Cruz perhaps when he first came up, before the wheels fell off for him.

I thought he pitched very well considering the hr to rolen, and until he started walking guys in the 5th. he is young, but for him to bounce back and have the inning he was having is huge for him, especially against a loaded 3-5 like the cardinals. defintely worth a second start

Barretts heroics kind of overshadowed Marshall's performance.

Marshall had an extremely impressive first outing in a playoff type atmosphere. He looks like a keeper for the rotation -- big left hander, good stuff, throws strikes, etc.

My only concern is his stamina for a full major league season. However, I'd much rather have him in the rotation than Rusch or Williams. If he begins to run out of gas mid-year, I hope Miller, Guzman, and/or Hill are ready.

I didn't mind the fact that he was getting squeezed until the zone changed for Ponson, who got 2 bottom zone strikes called while Pierre was hitting.

All players, managers, and fans want is consistency. The same two pitches to Pierre were strikes, but were balls to Pujols in the previous half of the inning.

I thought Marshall was very impressive.

and until he started walking guys in the 5th

I don't think he walked anybody in the fifth. he gave up a double on a good cutter to Taguchi (still don't know how he kept it fair), and a soft liner to center, got an out on the bunt, the beaned Eckstein.

which sometimes is understandable when one pitcher is a lefty and pitches downhill and the other is a righty three quarters guy...but then both teams went to the pen and the crap kept up, no matter what arm or arm angle was used.

but I don't think you can call the home plate umpiring inconsistent. the calls consistently benefited the Cards and screwed the Cubs.

I love that the Cubs overcame it.

I was at the game so I couldn't see what the velocity was from where I was sitting. What was his fastball hitting? Overall, I thought he did pretty well. I can't wait to see his next start.

If I'm remembering correctly it was hitting 90-92 on the ESPN gun.

I also him remember throwing a lot of pitches in the 86-88 range.

he showed good control & has a great curve which is close to hill's imo. with marshall, hill & guzman to go along with z & prior (and perhaps wade miller in the mix), the rotation looks to be very solid for years to come. i still like williams too but he has shown that he can only produce as a starter.

Watched Sportsday for a little bit after the D-lee conference online, The other 'big' news was prior to throw a session off the mound at wrigley today. Any 'rough' idea on timetables for the 3 injureteers???.

Sean Marshall reminded me of a more talented version of Mark Mulder.

He got kicked in the teeth early, but never let it get to him. It was impressive to see him hold it together when most pitchers would have freaked out.

Nice job.

I was impressed that Marshall bounced back. He very easily could have let the ump's bs calls ruin his outting, but he hung in there. The 5th inning was a little rough and that worries me. After guys started getting more looks at him they figured him out...or he was just getting bad breaks and maybe getting a little tired. I hope it's the latter.
