"Wood is throwing well, rated by many who saw him this spring as “fully back.” One player who watched him throw batting practice said that his “BP curve was better than most guys' ‘A’ curve.” "

He also said Prior and Miller were on about the same timetable. Sounds like they both need to build stamina, but are throwing without pain.

Color me cautiously optimistic.

I'm starting to believe Wood is going to fully recover from the surgery and he should be exciting to watch this year.

Is anyone else worried that Miller is not going to return to form? I've seen alot of articles that mentioned that he threw so many pitches or that he was on schedule to join the team in May, but nothing so far has said how he is throwing.

1) Please, make it happen. I want him to be a Cub for a long time and the only way that's happening is with a 2003 Wood performance this year

2) If he sucks, he sucks, Hendry got him for next to nothing.

As long as Prior and Wood return to form, I'll consider anything from Miller to be a bonus. He was signed to a no-risk contract much like Dempster and Williamson (except without the option, I believe), so if he doesn't pan out, no big deal. It would be nice if he does so the Cubs can have some more trade bait, but with Wood and Prior the Cubs would have a nasty rotation, Miller or no Miller.

And if there's no room for Miller, any team would be able to afford his 1-year, $1 million (not sure what the incentives are, if any) contract at the trade deadline. That could net us a good prospect or two.

Gah...I had done so well keeping my expectations reasonable for this team, but after this series this weekend, and the good news we're hearing on Wood, Prior and Miller, I'm getting way overexcited for this summer.

Zambrano

Wood

Prior

I know. It's just not right... for the rest of the National League!

Wood:

Cubs.com[/url]"]Kerry Wood had a good session Monday in Mesa, Ariz., and threw three sets of 20 pitches each to hitters in a simulated game. Rothschild said he wants to see how Wood recovers from that session before announcing the next step. Wood could be close to appearing in a Minor League game.

"Kerry is on a pretty good upswing and as long as he keeps on that road, we can get through this in a pretty good fashion," Rothschild said. "With shoulders, you have to play the wait-and-see game with recovery and that's what we'll do."

Prior:

Chicago Cubs pitcher Mark Prior threw 30 pitches off the bullpen mound at Wrigley Field on Tuesday, including some breaking balls at the end, and is making good progress in his rehab from a strained muscle in his right shoulder.

.............

"He's got a few more sides [to do] to build up strength and stamina and work on a few things mechanically and then he should be ready," Rothschild said.

Prior will take two days off, then throw another bullpen session Friday and increase the pitches, and follow that program one more time before he's re-evaluated. The right-hander isn't experiencing any pain in his shoulder since it first sidelined him on March 14.

I hope both Wood and Prior can come back healthy and maintain healthy for the rest of the season. I can't stand Rusch as much as I used to.

Bruce Miles offers a possible time-line for Wood's return.

Link.

Wood works: If rehabbing righty Kerry Wood (shoulder, knee) throws a simulated game Saturday, as planned, he’d be in line to throw another sim game Thursday. After that, it’s possible Wood could go on a minor-league rehab stint.

The Cubs have put no timetable on Wood’s return to the rotation. Under a best-case scenario, the earliest to look for Wood with the Cubs would be April 30 at home. May 5 at San Diego is another possibility.

Getting Wood back on April 30 would be great!

Interesting. An April 30th return would mean that he'd pitch just one rehab start. His endurance should be pretty good at that point, but I was still thinking more along the lines of at least two rehab starts.

I'm just amazed we're using "Kerry Wood" and "start" in the same sentence...that's progress as far as I'm concerned.

Wood's simulated game will be 15 pitches in each of the three innings, according to Cubs.com.

Prior threw 40 pitches today and will throw three innings of 15 pitches in a session tomorrow.

Miller threw 40 pitches today, as well.

This doesn't seem right to me. Injured Cubs pitchers aren't supposed to even progress ON schedule, let alone ahead of it. Something's afoot.

According to WGN Radio, Wood threw 51 pitches today and felt fine.

Sweet! Any word on his stuff?

We've been hearing that it's better than it has been since 03. I really hope that's the case.

Nope. Hopefully we'll get more of an update during the WGN telecast.

If he's at 51 pitches right now, I don't see him pitching in more than one additional simulated game. If they were particularly impressed, maybe even just a side session and then a rehab assigment.

According to Cubs.com, they're not set on another simulated game. He'll throw with the team on Monday in LA and then decide whether or not to start his rehab assignment.

Good news, all around. I think we'll see Wood around the beginning of May, or perhaps a little sooner. Now, the question which will face the Cubs: who to jettison from the rotation? I vote Rusch (too bad my vote doesn't count). I like what I've seen from Marshall, and Williams looked good last night. Too many deep counts, but still effective.

Rusch gets my vote too. Someone (UK?) points to stats showing that Rusch is better at starting than pitching out of the pen (sucks at both). Totally cool, but I'd rather have Rusch blowing a few middle innings than the first 5-7 innings of a game.

I'd love to DFA him, but I guess he gets his millions anyway if no one picks him up. Who would? Texas?

My guess now that we have an extra pitcher is that there is two possible scenarios.

The first has either Rusch or Williams shuttled back to the pen with either Novoa or Aardsma sent back to Iowa.

If Wood is taking Marshall's spot, then Marshall will be sent to Iowa so he can keep starting in case he is needed later in the season.

The crunch will happen with either Prior or Miller is ready.

It'd have to be Novoa getting sent back because Aardsma is still in Iowa.

I think he was called up after the game today.
