for real, though...what a waste of talent. 100 wins by age 25 and by age 41 you're doing a 7 1/2 month prison term for violating your parole.

Which guy wasted more natural talent? Dwight Gooden or Darryl Strawberry?

I'd have to say Gooden. I'll grant you Strawberry was a legit five-tool guy but if Gooden keeps his nose clean he retires as one of the two or three best pitchers ever.

I'm going to have to agree that Gooden was the biggest waste, though Strawberry is close.

Look at these numbers for Gooden's early career:

At 19, ERA+ of 137.

At 20, ERA+ of 226.

At 21, ERA+ of 124.

So much promise there.

I have a legitimate question....

Why is it that this guy has not been banned from baseball yet? Is his cocaine addiction not as bad as gambling? I know he will probably not become a hall of famer but how many strikes will they allow guys like this. These drug addictions should be taken just as seriously as gambling/steroids if you ask me.

Do you need to ban a guy who pretty much banned himself?

Definately Gooden. If he stayed clean he could be matching Clemens win for win right now in a semi-competition for the greatest pitcher of our generation. Like somebody else said, that 1985 season was one of the best pitching seasons in recent memory.

This Cubs fan says it was one of the worst pitching seasons in my lifetime.

Um, he pitched for the Mets. NL East...

Just because he pitched in the same division as the Cubs you won't admit that it was a great pitching season? If I misinterpreted you let me know. But that's how I took your statement.

It was a dominating season by a hated rival. That's why the Cubs fan in me says it was one of the worst. As a baseball fan, it was one of the best seasons I can remember.

I wouldn't necessarily refer to the Mets as a hated rival.

They sure as hell were in 1985.

Well I am a bit out of my league since I was all of 1 year old in 1985 so I don't think I followed baseball then as much as other people may have. I realized that after I wrote my previous response.

We were 4-14 against the Mets in 1985. They flat-out owned us that year. That was back in the glory days before the NL Central. The Mets were probably more hated as rivals than the Cardinals. People your age will probably never appreciate the hatred people my age and older hold for the Mets. A lot of it has gone away since the Central was added, but I still remember those days.

I just hate the Mets because they are a New York team and I tend to despise all teams from New York in any sport. I understand it's not the same thing.

I miss having the Mets in our division. It was not a friendly rivalry. It was worse the Cubs-Sox or Cubs-Cardinals now. Partly because the Mets of the mid-80s had so many guys who were so easy to hate.

Remember the brawl at Wrigley in August '84? If I recall correctly it started with Ed Lynch drilling Keith Moreland. I still remember Bill Robinson having to be restrained by Mets players to keep him from going into the stands after a fan. I think that's when people started to believe we were going to win the division that year.

God I hated those guys. Good times.

There was no NL Central back in the day.

The 1986 NLCS is still the greatest series in my memory, completely heartbreaking. The Mets had a hell of a team that year. Gooden allowed 1 run in game 1 and pitched 10 innings in game 2, again only giving up a run. His ERA for the series was 1.06. This guy was going to be the greatest pitcher of his generation. Sad to see people go down this road.

Yes, because if he cleans up his act, I am sure someone would be willing to give him some sort of job at some level of a major league organization. I just dont think he should get to even sniff that possibility.
