My NLCS collapse memories...

Game 6 -- in Chevy Chase, MD. Montgomery County had outlawed smoking a week or 2 before, so I went outside with those smokers around the 7th because it was gorgeous outside. The Cubs were up 3-0, and Prior seemed to be cruising along. I figured it was over. A few minutes later, someone came outside to tell me the fish tied it up. Son of a... I finish my conversation, go inside, check the score, and it's 8-3?!?!?! Oh well, they're not beating Prior AND Wood. Or so I thought.

Game 7 -- flying back from Reagan National, have a 2 or 3 hour layover in Minneapolis. I am scurrying all over the place trying to find a TV. I get to Chili's in time to weasel my way into seeing Kerry's blast. I too thought the momentum had shifted and it was all ours. It wasn't long until the crowd overwhelmed me and I had to move. Checking my phone for a score was my only recourse, as every establishment with a TV was too crowded to enter. 7th inning or so is when I had to board the plane. And of course, I could no longer check the score. When we landed in Moline, the pilot welcomed us to Iowa, said the temperature was whatever, "and oh yeah, the Cubs lost again".

I'm sitting here trying to figure out if there was ever a Cub HR that I have witnessed that was more exciting than this Kerry Wood HR. That was straight electrifying.

The only other one that jumped to mind when you said this was the Gary Gaetti homer in the wild card playoff game against the Giants in 1998. Our expectations were a bit lower then... :P

I'd still say the Kerry one was better, but just thought I'd mention this one.

Kerry's homer was the last time I believed the Cubs had a chance to get to the World Series. But I knew it was over before Wood flipped his glove into the stands, so that I didn't see. Who got it anyway?

It sure would be nice to see him come back. I really thought that he had finally grown into the leader and the pitcher he could be at the major league level.

EDIT: May you roast in the innermost level of Hell, Alex S. Gonzalez.

Please Woody?

That wouldn't be good enough, he has to win 15 before we consider him any good. :roll:

I'm both drawn to and repelled by the 2003 highlights. 2003 - 2005 were the years when the baseball demons were to be exorcised:

2003 was the year of the Cubs;

2004 was the year of the Red Sox;

2005 was the year of the White Sox. . .

. . .except that we dropped the ball (I'm tallkin' to you, Gonzo).
