IIRC, a sticking point of Miller's signing was that he had to be added to the 25 man roster by Opening Day. Thus, per their agreement, I don't think the Cubs have the option to place him on the DL.
That makes no sense, because it had been known all along that he wouldn't be ready to start the season. There may be a clause requiring him to be added to the 40-man (as opposed to 25-man) roster.

Hold up, I meant to say "40 man roster." I just re-read my post. Disregard the 25 man comment.

I think his question is if one of the non-roster guys makes the team is the 40 man full or will the Cubs be able to add them them without waiving a player.

The 40-man roster is currently full, but unless Wellemeyer defies all odds and reason and makes the team, he will be off due to his out-of-options status.

As such, there is effectively room on the 25-man roster for one NRI.

IMO Wellemeyer is a lock at this point to make the opening day roster.

He may not stick once they need a 5th starter but until that time I don't see anyone else that would even be realistically competing for that 7th bullpen spot since Novoa is out indefinitely.

I also don't see any way Grissom does not make the opening day roster. If he doesn't then Pagan has to be the 5th outfielder and Theriot would have to make the team as the 7th infielder. There are no other reasonable candidates already on the 40 man. Therefore, Hendry needs to clear two 40 man roster spots and I assume he will do that by trading some guys away for prospects(e.g. - Walker).

Rather than start a new thread, I'll post this here since we are already talking about the 40 man roster. According to Bruce Miles the Cubs have to put Wade Miller on the 40 man by opening day which means that if Dusty wants to keep his star outfielder Marquis Grissom, we would have to cut two from the 40 man roster. Obviously Wellmeyer could be one but who would be the other? Other interesting notes about the possible final roster are that the Cubs appear to be going with 11 pitchers and 14 hitters (finally! no more 12 pitchers) and and that Pagan appears to have the inside track on one of the backup OF slots. Mike Kiley in the Sun-Times seems to concur in these thoughts as well.

This could be why the Cubs are trying so desperately to trade Walker.

Ryu is in the running for a long relief role if he doesn't get the #5 slot in the rotation.

I'd like to see Wellemeyer traded before Opening Day.

That makes sense (it's fairly common for minor league contracts to have such a clause). That would mean that he could be placed on the 15-day DL but not the 60-day.

I don't understand why they would keep Grissom, which means they have to open up a 40 man roster spot for him, when they have a guy like Pagan who is very similar (if not better) who had a great spring and is already on the 40 man roster.

So if they don't keep Grissom their bench is:

Blanco

Neifi

Hairston

Mabry

Pagan

???

Who is your 6th bench guy? The only player on the 40 man roster that makes any sense is Theriot. Theriot is fine, but now you have three back-up middle infielders (Hairston, Neifi, Theriot) and only two back-up outfielders (Pagan, Mabry), with Pagan hardly being a sure thing to produce. Hairston can also be a back-up OF but indications seem to be that he will be getting a lot of starts at 2B so Walker will probably be on the bench as much if not more than him.

I am not a big Grissom fan but with who Baker has left in camp I don't see any better options for now than keeping him around.

Has Restovich played well enough to prove he belongs?

So who is left to battle for the last 5 spots?

Yech - could Koronka be getting a bullpen spot?

Howry

Koronka

Actually, if it is the seventh spot I kind of rather Ryu goes to AAA and gets a lot of innings instead of rotting at the end of the bench waiting for a blow out to get some work. Koronka can hang around out there waiting for mop up work and then go down to AAA when they recall the fifth starter in mid April.

Other possibility is that Hill or Marshall gets the 4th starter spot and Williams goes to the pen.

So who is left to battle for the last 5 spots?

Novoa

Ohman

Wuertz

Koronka

(who is the 15th pitcher?)

2 Catchers: Barrett and Blanco

7 INF:

Lee

Aram

Cedeno

Walker

Hairston

Perez

Theriot

6 OF:

Pierre

It might be Miller, since he still has to be placed on the 40 man.

Cubs.com only lists 14, and Miller is an NRI. Makes sense to me.

Damn, cuts are coming fast. Looks like the position player situation is settled, all that's left is the last bullpen cuts (and Wade Miller going on the DL)

Down to 29 now after Restovich was sent to minor league camp.

so unless a trade happens, it looks like Theriot will be on the Opening Day roster.

A temporary one until April 15th, though.
