The most recent thing that I have seen was Sunday's report on Cubs.com

Kerry Wood and Wade Miller both are continuing to make progress in their shoulder rehab programs. Each is on a four-day throwing program. On Saturday, Wood threw 20 pitches, rested, then threw 20 more off the mound. He's working up to 50-60 pitches.

"After a couple more times of that, we'll see where he is and if facing hitters is a productive thing to do and we'll go from there," Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. "Wade is about a week to 10 days behind that. [Miller] was on the mound [saturday] and threw 30 pitches."

Amazing that we might have Wood AND Miller back BEFORE prior.

Just looking at pitch counts, it sounds like Wood would have been ahead of Prior even without Prior's shoulder injury. That's amazing. Go Woody.

I don't mean to be negative, but seeing Wood and Prior the last two years, I can't get excited about either "coming back early" from an injury(particularly Wood because of his poor mechanics).

Does anyone seriously think that Wood can give us 30-35 quality starts this year (or any year for that matter)?

I just get tired of going into a season depending on Wood/Prior only to be let down. 2003 may just be the last time we will ever see Wood and Prior dominant in the same year.

That's one problem of many I have with Hendry. Who here on this board really thought Wood and Prior were going to start the season on the right foot? I would assume most of us didn't. Did we really believe Rusch is the answer to take Wood or Prior's place when faced with an injury? Do you guys honestly believe Wade Miller is going to find his old form of 3 years ago? I personally don't think so especially considering Maddux's fastball was faster than his last year. Is Hendry so close-minded he did not see any of these things developing? Hendry yet again has left this ball club with more holes to fill.

I think no one thought Wood would start on time (given how late his surgery was completed - something the Cubs brass should fry for), however I think most people thought Prior would be ok. There was no reason to suspect a shoulder injury.

Not until spring training started at least, when he couldn't pitch and had to go on an extreme caution delayed start to the season.

Well yep, but that was after Hendry had no more options. I think he dropped the ball regardless though on SP. Rusch should never have been signed.

What's the over/under on one of the coming up and going back down before Prior makes his first start?

If that includes either Wood or Miller having a setback while coming back then I would say extremely high.

I never expected Prior to go down with a non-freak injury this season. I'm actually a little pleased with Wood's rehab (the knee seems to be a minor hitch). Of course something else will come up this season, but I'm trying to go into this season happy. I very well might commit suicide if I start out negative and have to view another sub .500 season.

Wood is progressing a lot better than expected but he's still building strength. He may return much sooner than expected.

Cubs.com

Wood is throwing off a mound twice in a four-day program, and progressing well. Baker said the last report he got on the right-hander was that he was "awesome."

...What does Wood think about the possibility that he could be ready by the end of April?

"We'll see," he said. "I still have to build up to that point where I can throw 100 pitches and be able to do it four days later. It's optimistic, but we'll see what happens."

On Wednesday, Wood will throw 50 to 55 pitches off the mound. He throws 20, then sits, another 20, and sits, and then another 10 or more, depending on how he feels. He's sticking to his fastball, slider and curve now. Everything feels good.

"We're getting there," Wood said. "Obviously, I'd like to have better location on my fastball. When I'm on the mound, I'm working on trying to throw to spots. It's to be expected."

Meanwhile, Mark Prior continues to do his exercises, but is not allowed to throw until he is examined this weekend by the Cubs orthopedic specialist, Dr. Stephen Gryzlo. Prior has a strained muscle in his right shoulder.

"He's working his butt off trying to get back," Baker said of Prior. "He always works. He's trying to get back and help us. I'm sure it's eating him up not to be out there."

Not sure if this has been posted yet. Got it from rotoworld.

Kerry Wood - S - Cubs

Cubs manager Dusty Baker indicated today that Kerry Wood (shoulder, knee) could return in late April.

"He very well could be," Baker said. "Everybody heals differently, everybody progresses differently. The dates are a preliminary thing you shoot for. As long as he's not feeling any discomfort or soreness from throwing, we're very satisfied." Wood has yet to face hitters, but he is working off a mound. He's due to throw 50-55 pitches on Wednesday. "We're picking up the intensity a little bit," Wood said. "The other day, when I threw off the mound, I was letting it go without any apprehension at all and putting more on it and kind of testing it. I recovered pretty well from that and we'll do it again [Wednesday]. One of these next times or two, we'll put some hitters in there and get some feedback from them." Mar. 21 - 4:33 pm et

Why do I feel myself getting excited? Am I a sucker?

No, you're a diehard Cub fan - like the rest of us chumps on the board. :D

"He's feeling good," Hendry said. "It's very loose. His delivery looks great. He's throwing the ball with a lot of pop that I didn't expect so shortly after the knee scope.

"It's crisp. It's getting there quick. It's getting there real easy. It has been real impressive. Now it's just a matter of building up his endurance. If you went out and watched 30-40 pitches from him, you wouldn't know it's any different than a guy throwing a side in the middle of the season."

Wood is satisfied too.

"That's better than him saying I look [terrible]," Wood said. "I'm pleased with it. We're still going in the direction we want to be going, so I can't complain."

Wood has been throwing from the mound every fourth day, although he has not faced hitters yet. In between, he throws to keep his arm loose and strong. So his thoughts on the progress?

"I just go by how I feel," he said. "I feel pretty good. I haven't had hitters yet so I can't get a read until I see hitter's reactions. The other day I was letting it go without any apprehension at all and putting more on it and testing it. I recovered pretty good from that. The ball has been coming out pretty good.

"Any time you're coming back from an injury you, want be out there throwing without thinking about it. That's the biggest key. You don't want to be thinking about it and changing the way you throw."

During his sessions, Wood has been working on new mechanics with pitching coach Larry Rothschild and said they "had been pretty smooth. I've been thinking about that instead of my shoulder so that has been helping a little bit."

The knee has been no problem. The shoulder?

"Yeah, there's soreness but it seems to be more regular 'pitching' soreness than it is from the surgery," Wood said. "So that's moving in the right direction."

If Wood could return before May 1, it would be as many as two weeks before early predictions. It also would mean the Cubs might need a fifth starter from the minor leagues for only two turns.

chicagosports.com[/url]"]Kerry Wood threw breaking balls Wednesday in a 52-pitch bullpen session. He will have at least one more session before he faces live hitting. "He's a competitor, and if he throws a pitch and a guy hits it hard, he's probably going to throw the next one harder," Rothschild said. "I have to make sure he's ready for that if we're going to do it." Wood probably will start the season in Arizona. … Wade Miller threw 25 pitches off a mound and is 7 to 10 days behind Wood's schedule, meaning they should return within a week or two of each other.

With Prior having some serious problems now we turn our attention to wood and miller. And can only HOPE, that Wood really will have a nice sturdy year this year . And Miller can come back and be competitive. So far it looks pretty promising. . .
