why is it that everybody's got such a thing for defense these days? do they think it makes them seem 'fundamental'? wow, your lf and 1b defense got better...two pivotal defensive positions. nevermind the 30 homers you just shipped out...those runs will all be more than made up by having a good defensive first baseman. :roll:

But...but...but...but...but...Doug Eyechart won the World Series for Boston!!!!

It's a good trade for Boston, bad trade for the Reds no matter how you spin it. Boston gets a 24-year old outfielder with "light-tower" power for a 29-year old barely league average pitcher.

The Reds' pitching needs aside, this isn't a move that helps them. They aren't winning anything in 2006 and likely aren't going to be competitive either. Adding or not adding Arroyo doesn't change that.

They could have traded Pena for a minor league arm with a much higher ceiling than Bronson. They would have gambled on "proveness" but at least could have gotten someone who might make a difference. As it is, they've gotten a pitcher who is likely to give them an ERA+ in the 90-100 range (which could be obtained in FA in any given year) and now have one less trading chip. Furthermore, they no longer have a surpluss to allow them to make the big deal that might have set them up for a run in 2007-2009. No matter, how you spin it, it's a bad deal for the Reds.

Trading Pena for a pitcher who will be worse than Jerome Williams is just a bad idea.

For the Red Sox, getting Pena is a gamble, but with a full rotation and Papelbon and Lester coming along, it was one they could afford to make.

It is what all the cool people in MLB are doing this year.

WOW- Wily Mo is going to crush in Fenway-

Reds=HOSED

to bad thats all he can do, whats his career BA and OBP? But I would still rather have his potential over Arroyo.

You have to basically have had a career before you can look at things like career BA and OBP. The kid just turned 24.

Our very own Derrek Lee had a .206 AVG and a .263 OBP at the age of 23, and the stats would be pretty similar for his "career" up to that point with Wily Mo.

Sammy Sosa had a .260/.317 at the age of 23. And that was his highest OBP to date. Sosa only hit 8 HR's that year.

Is it safe to say that what these guys did at 23 is not an accurate assessment of how their careers turned out?

I don't see Wily Mo ever taking walks. Of course, I didn't see it with young Sammy either. Still, I think he's gonna be a guy that puts up numbers similar to a poor man's Andruw Jones.

Well, after watching Wily Mo barely make it around the 1st base bag on a dropped fly ball by the Cuban LFer, my opinion of Wily Mo has dropped significantly. Lazy ballplayer that lacks heart and hustle. How coincidental that he got traded a day later.

I'm no big fan or apologist for Pena, but c'mon, unless you have alot of evidence to support you I think those comments are a bit harsh based on that one incident.

David Ortiz spoke about Pena yesterday/today and mentioned that he had a great work ethic and the organization spoke with him and he's anxious to work hard on improving his defense and cutting down on strikeouts - at age 24, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and see if he can develop into a premier player - he certainly has the tools.

All I know is that I hope he can learn something about hitting from Manny Ramirez, but the rest of the things like hustle, heart and hard work better come from Ortiz.
