Foxsports.com's Rosenthal is reporting that a deal could be in the works.

The Reds, in desperate need of starting pitching, could be targeting Red Sox right-hander Bronson Arroyo. One of their top scouts, Gene Bennett, watched Arroyo pitch against the Orioles on Sunday.

...The Red Sox, however, also are shopping right-hander Matt Clement and left-hander David Wells; they offered Clement to the Phillies and several other clubs last week, and reportedly are discussing him in a possible deal for Pirates first baseman/outfielder Craig Wilson.

Strangely, he mentions the Cubs have shown interest as well (it can't be recent).

The Orioles, in need of a left fielder, are also among the teams pursuing Pena. The Cubs, too, are believed to have shown interest, but it is doubtful the Reds would trade Pena within their division. The Royals and Twins are among the other teams with possible interest.

is he a lefty or righty? he'd probably be a good platoon in right if he hit right handed.

He's a righty. It still surprises me considering Grissom, Restovich, and Pagan are all battling. He has power but his OBP is horrible.

so basically he's a guy the cubs will try to get?

rather than Pena, I'd rather the Cubs try to swoop in on some of that Craig Wilson action. if you're the Pirates, with all those good young lefties, who do you prefer, Clement and his big contract, or another prospect and some bullpen help?

I think a smart platoon of Wilson and Jones gives the Cubs a .900 OPS out of right.

Who's in charge of this platoon situation?

Thanks, I just spit Gatorade on my monitor.

I like Wily Mo, and it's too bad the Reds would ask for the world to trade him within the division. I hope he goes to the Red Sox, he should do pretty well with the monster there.

If Willy Mo developed rather quickly next year, the middle of Boston's lineup would be very scary. Pena, Ramirez, and Ortiz could be very potent when they aren't striking out.

Why are pitching starved teams going after Arroyo? Yet, there has been no reported interest in Jerome Williams who is better, young, and cheaper than Arroyo. When Wood, Prior, and Miller get healthy, the Cubs should be able to get a ton for Williams if the Sox can get Pena or Wilson for Arroyo.

They might be interested in Williams. But I suspect that we have little interest in trading Williams right now. And remember, too, that the Red Sox front office has been seemingly leaking information like a sieve for some time.

Trade official. They just announced it on ESPN Cold Pizza. Reds trade Wily Mo Pena to the Red Sox for Bronson Arroyo and cash. I bet Arroyo is kicking himself now for taking a hometown discount.

Reds have to be one of the stupidest orginizations of all time. You see they make deals for pitching yet don't get good pitchers in return. AkA DJ Williams for Sean Casey and Arroyo for Willy Mo. Not to mention being happy about signing someone like Ramon Ortiz. The Red Sox really gave it to them on that one. Willy Mo could be a very good outfeilder for them rather than Trot Nixon. Also now that I think about it that outfield not only is good offensively now, but defensively as well.

Didn't Boston all but gaurantee Arroyo that they wouldn't trade him after he took less money to stay there? I'd be PISSED if I were him.

That's what I was wondering. If I recall wasn't that a big part of the reason he signed such a reasonable contract?

I think in the end the Red Sox will see the bigger benefits of this trade. Pena definitely has some big potential, unfortunately he is going into another situation where there isn't guaranteed playing time.

It does appear as though Freel's in line for some additional playing time.

Freel should have been the everyday 2B. But apparently, the Reds were talking about Tony Womack being the man. That in itself shows how crappily that organization is run.

In fairness to the Reds, Freel has had an absolutely pathetic ST. .103/.186/.154 I like Freel a lot, but even I wouldn't be in a hurry to hand him a job after a dismal start to the baseball year.
