For fun, let's pick who is having the best spring at each position (min 10 AB's) and let that decide who should start for the Cubs in 2006. And we'll give Lee / Barrett / Zambrano the benefit of the doubt since they're playing higher level competition.

C - Barrett

1B - Lee

2B - Hairston

3B - Ramirez

SS - Theriot

LF - Murton

CF - Pie

RF - Mabry

C - Fox

IF - Walker

IF - Ojeda (yes, he's outplayed both Neifi and Cedeno this spring)

IF/OF - Sing

OF - Restovich

OF - Jones

SP - Z

SP - Maddux

SP - Marshall

SP - Ryu

SP - Brownlie

RP - Eyre

RP - Howry

RP - Dempster

RP - Novoa

RP - Wells

RP - Ohman

There you have it...your 2006 Chicago Cubs.

And that is why managers don't base their MLB rosters solely on spring training.

Yeah, I think that's the point I'm going after here.

Plus, it's a nice way of pointing out a few surprising spring performances.

Pagan looks pretty good.

His .294/.316/.471 would certainly beat out Pierre's .273/.304/.364 with three caught stealings.

But Pagan's line isn't as impressive as the other OF's I listed. For example, Pie's .333/.375/.800 is pretty nice.

That's an .800 slugging percentage, so yeah. He has three triples and a double, iirc.

I told you folks 2 years ago that Pie can turn on a ball and split the RCF gap. He's not gonna hit a ton of HRs, but he will be among the league leaders in triples every year he plays until he loses a step.

Man I am fired up about Pie. I hope he hits well and strikes out less in Iowa this year. If he comes along that will give the Cubs some flexibality with regard to Pierre and Jones.

I am just as fired up about Guzman/Marshall though. If those two reach thier potential it opens up a lot of options and cash for the Cubs to pursue other avenues whether via trade or free agency.

If Guzman, Marshall, and Pie are all 100% and reach their potential, the Cubs' will get an All-Star OF, and 2 top of the line starting pitchers added to the talent they already have. The Cubs would be able to throw all kinds of money at Lee, Prior, and Zambrano, and still afford to go out and get a couple more players to create an elite team.

I like Pie's speed and power, but I'll wait until his BB/K rate improves before getting too excited about him.
