— Jhonny Peralta and the Cleveland Indians both got the security they sought Friday when the shortstop signed a five-year, $13 million contract that the team has the option to extend in 2011

5 years, 13 million.

For a guy that hit .292/.366/.520 with 24 homers last year as a SS?

Wow.

They didn't buy out any of his free agency years. He may have made a bit more if he kept hitting at that rate throughout his indentured servitude, but it's not that big of a bargain.

May have? He probably would have made significantly more than that the last three years. Plus this gives the team leverage when talking about an extension 2-3 years from now. They can tell him they'll rip up the last couple years if he gives them his first couple free agent years.

What did Soriano get in arbitration this year? $10mil coming off a season much inferior to what Pheralta did last year.

I think Pheralta would have had an opportunity to make twice what this contract is worth if he'd have went the year-to-year contract route. This is a steal for the Indians.

If Peralta keeps up that line, he might've made 13M in 2010 alone.

this is a fantastic deal. peralta agreed to accept less money than he probably could have, and now the indians lock up a rising young star for all of his arbitration years plus have the option of keeping him for a seventh.

It's quite a big gamble by both parties. I'm surprised.

I don't see how this is a big gamble by the Indians. How much regression do you expect from Peralta that he won't be worth ~12.8M in 3 arbitration years?

Weren't we just talking about Angel Berroa in the DeJesus thread?

This is exactly what small market clubs should be doing. The highest risk is maybe you overpay by 3M over the next 5 years, and that's if Peralta sinks to Berroa's current levels. Peralta also has a higher standard to fall from than Berroa did. If Peralta fell off at the same pace that Berroa did, I think he'd be worth right around 13M If he stays where he's at, I think he's worth nearly twice that over the length of the contract.

i don't think berroa was as highly regarded coming up as peralta was. peralta is the real deal - berroa was never considered that, i believe.

They had pretty similar minor league numbers. Peralta had a bit more patience, Berroa a bit more power.

Yeah, if Im the indians I would have wanted to wait another year. How soon people forget Alex Cintron and Angel Berroa.

Peralta's WARP3 in 2005 was 10.8. He has a whole lot of room for regression before the Indians have to worry about overpaying.

I was thinking as much about the risk of injury as of regression. Five years is five years, a long time to commit to any player, especially if it's backloaded.

Peralta posted nearly 100 points higher in OPS in his breakout season compared to Berroa's rookie season.

Fantastic deal for the Indians.
