So, I lucked out today and managed to get tickets to Opening Day this year. I've never been to any team's Opening Day though, so I was wondering what to expect. Do they have any ceremonies or anything like that? Anyone know what they've done the past few years or what is planned for this year?

I once made it to the Mets opening day, against the Cubs. I also went the next day.

What I remember:

It was freaking cold. Luckily the sun hit us for about 6 innings, which kept it bearable, but other than that it was bitter for a ballgame. Reminded me of "spring" practices in high school, only without movement to keep you warm.

There was very little in terms of pageantry (coming off a sub .500 season, the Mets - and in this case the Cubs - had nothing to celebrate or boast about). There was a sense of excitement in the air, especially walking through the gate. Smiles were ear to ear, everybody was happy to be out of work, not to mention to see a season start fresh. Joe Borowski's dad was all giddy in the 6th, waiting in a long line for the pisser. But all in all, it was just another game, probably more like a later season game than a typical April/May game, but nothing crazy.

Much better to go to opening day than the last game of the season. I went to the last game of the season 2 years ago, complained the entire time, and ended up almost getting in a fight with a guy that taunted Juan Cruz with the same taunt ("Throw the ball up into the stands! Just like where your pitches end up!") for about 15 straight minutes, which he followed up by getting angry at me when I started berating Dusty for some dumb move or another.

Also, it was pretty freaking cold.

The game against the Braves? I was there too. Such a bitter day. The only good thing was the Stoney chant during the 7th inning.

Yep. That and Jason Dubois making it look like he was a solid corner outfielder for years to come.

Forget ceremonies, the most important aspect of opening day (and the next) is the magnet schedule!!!

I believe the only thing that they do special for Opening Day is introduce the teams down the first base and third base lines like they do in the playoffs and All Star game.

I have been to a bunch of opening day games at Wrigley and don't ever remember them doing that.

Either they don't, or I hung out at Murphy's too long and missed it.

I think it might be the second choice. :D

Which isn't a bad choice, given the temperatures for recent Home Openers.

Real Cub fans wear shorts to every game no matter what the temperature is.

Maybe that's why those $80 Cubs blankets sell so well in the gift shop.

At least the Old Style will be cold.
