He was going to get 10M regardless of the team he played for b/c of arbitration. What's it matter where it comes from? I don't agree with that attitude, but what has the team done for him? It should be a reciprocal relationship.

What has the team done for him? They are employing him and paying him an exhorbitant contract. What else could they do?

You're looking at it from a fan's perspective. Look at it from Soriano's. He was guaranteed that money by the arbitration process. Someone was going to pay it. He gets traded w/o his consent (no veto power) and then is asked to switch positions, costing him money down the road when he hits FA. What has the team done for him other than take money out of his pocket?

Again, what else could they do? They traded for him (something he should consider flattering), and trades are part of baseball. The position switch question has come up since he was a Yankee. They didn't just spring this on him out of the blue. And they aren't taking m oney out of his pocket. Soriano is going to get his money next year.

What else could the team do for him?

If Todd Walker was traded tomorrow, against his wished, and asked to play in LF, would he be justified to respond like Soriano? What would the team have done for him? He was already guaranteed his money from somebody?

What should they have done? Given him his position. Asked Vidro to move to the OF. He's having problems turning the DP. His knees are crap and his armstrength isn't there. Stick him in LF.

They're both going to be starting, so what's the difference where they play (as far as the team's concerned)?

Yes, it will cost Soriano money. An offensive 2B is going to make more than a defensive liability in LF with the same offensive production.

Walker made his decision as a FA. Soriano didn't. Big difference.

So Vidro, the incumbent, should be moved, and the new guy should get the job?

Soriano will not lose a penny from a move to the OF. MLB is terrible at accurately assessing player value. Soriano will continue to get paid for what he did with the Yankees, as opposed to what he could do for his next team. The only way Soriano loses money next year is if he bombs offensively in DC. But if you then give him the right to be a malcontent, then you are giving every free agent to be pitcher the right to be a malcontent if he's in Texas, Colorado, Houston or some other bandbox. And you are giving every batter traded to DC, SD and the pitcher's park a right to demand a trade to a new team. Soriano isn't going to lose money by going to the OF. He is worth less to a team as an OFer, and teams would be stupid to sign him to a big deal as an OFer. But Soriano will get an offer for big money next year, regardless of what position he plays this year.

Yes, he is worth less an an OF. Yes, MLB is horrible at assessing value. Yes, Soriano will make big money regardless. It's not about "big" money, it's about "bigger" money. MLB's assessment ability is a pretty poor argument for Soriano not being justified in his complaint b/c it won't cost him any money.

Yes, Vidro should move, if only for the likelihood of it being an easier position to play on his body. It would be nice to get 140 games out of him. He's not going to play 140+ games at 2B this year. I'd put money on it. Have you heard the reports on his health/play in ST so far? Not good.

I'm not giving the right for Soriano to be a malcontent. I'm simply saying he has a legitimate gripe, especially since the team made the decision to trade for him. Soriano had no say in the process. The Nationals did. It didn't take Ms. Cleo to see this problem coming.

Soriano speaks out. From Gammons' blog.

"They never even talked to me; they just made the trade and announced I am moving," says Soriano. "Am I embarrassed? Yes. They tried to corner me. Now when I come back, how can I learn to play the position in a week or 10 days? I've played four games in my life in left field. How am I going to do at a position I haven't played?"

Well you could have got that practice in the past, when you were asked repeatedly to make the move.
