Carlos Marmol, SP CHC

News: Cubs right-hander Carlos Marmol reportedly was throwing 97 mph in winter ball.

Analysis: Marmol won't be a candidate to make the team out of spring, but he could help midseason as a reliever. His value will be limited to deeper NL-only Rotisserie leagues when he gets the call.

Marmol is my sleeper prospect in all of baseball.

(keep in mind I only really follow the Cubs prospects :P)

I have him as my #1 Marmol in all of baseball.

97 sounds good. I think it would be fun to see him and Guzman at some point this year.

I didn't know he had that much velocity. What is really exciting about him is that he has only pitched for a few years. Anyone know if he is going to be in Iowas rotation this year or will he start the season with the Jaxx?

In the recent prospects Vineline, Fleita says that he clocked Marmol in that kind of velocity (or perhaps even faster) during Dominican league. So I believe that it's true.

How good that will make him as a pitcher, I don't know. We know Farsnworth was faster than that without always being all that good. And we know that Marmol had an ERA in the 6's in the Dominican, so however hard he was throwing, he obviously wasn't getting guys out with that.

It's pretty obvious that Fleita likes him, though.

He won't consistently hit 97 as a starter. He'll be mostly 91-93. As a reliever though, he should be able to hit the high 90s fairly often. I think he'll ultimately be a reliever unless he can really refine his changeup.
