>> pat is probably one of my favorite people.

Me too. I think I'll always associate Pat with the wild 1998 ride, which was (I believe) his first year doing Cubs PbP on WGN.

I love the way he calls the game. Relaxing with a cool drink and listening to Pat & Ron is my ideal way to spend a summer evening.

Incidentially, I have to admit I also really like Ed Farmer, who will start doing White Sox radio PbP in 2006. Absolute opposite of Hawk: he has poignant observations, interesting comments, isn't a homer and is very easy to listen to.

Pat is very good, but Santo isn't a very good color guy at all. I understand his purpose and appreciate his passion, but it's one of the least informative (and insightful) broadcasts around.

I think if you put Hughes with someone a little more insightful, you'd have a great combo

Funny, I think that's exactly what makes Pat and Ron a great combo. Like the night Ron was giving the pitching matchups against the Brewers and trying to figure out who the Cubs used to have that reminded him so much of Ruben Quevedo. We all knew it was Ruben himself, and Pat gently got Ron there too. Ron may not be the most informative, but he and Pat together make the broadcasts interesting.

As a color analyst, he's supposed to bring more to the table than odd ramblings and incoherent/incorrect observations. If it were a 3 man booth where Pat did his thing, Ron did his, and there was an insightful color guy, it would be a lot better.

My standards are higher than just bringing enthusiasm and passion. Any fan pulled out of the stands can do that.

Glad to know I'm not the only one that feels this way.

Let me add, I like Santo as a person. Seems like a wonderful guy. However, the broadcast booth probably isn't the best place for him.

I wasn't a big fan of Hughes' style at first. But after listening to him for quite a few years now, I've realized that he does a very good job. Factor in the patience he displays when having a conversation with Santo, and you begin to realize that the Cubs are lucky to have him in the booth.

I know. Ron is absolutely terrible. He is so bad, well, he is so bad, he is good.

I love listening on the computer but I have to monitor the game thread here to know eaxactly what is going on.

I love listening to Pat and Ron becuase the greatness of one is completely mitagated by the badness of the other. They are the yin and yang of radio baseball.

To me listening to the two of them is high entertainment. Especially when the Cubs are playing poorly. Nobody whines better than Ronny.

However, I can see where people would disagree.

I love pat and ron. Ron is a complete and total homer, which makes the broadcast even better. Pat and Ron are the perfect match. Anybody that can make last years cubs bearable...they are heroes

In my opinion, Pat is the PBP and color analyst. Ron is along to provide the entertainment and to make fans feel like they have a friend in the booth. Santo might be great for entertainment, but is a horrible color analyst. He has gotten a little bit better in not letting his stories go on through a big pitch or a big hit. But, to me, Pat is the PBP and color guy.

The only fault I can see with Pat and Ron as a team is when they have a guest in the booth. They completely forget about the game.

'Exactly my thoughts. Whenever they have someone on it seems like you can never even get the score out of them. I have had times when ive listened for several minutes without them talking about who was batting or what the socre was.
