Just reported on ESPN AM 1000. He agreed to 3.65m

I'll take it. I still want a multi-year deal that postpones MP's FA one year.

IIRC, the Cubs control him for 3 more years.

2006, 2007 and 2008. He might be making over $10m in arbitration by the time 2008 comes around.

I'd like to see them put together a deal that bumps up his 2006 salary a bit (incentive for him) and locks him into 2007 and 2008 salaries around $8.5m and $10m, but also gives the Cubs an option on 2009 (the Cubs incentive).

Seems a bit unusual to void your contract and then settle for almost exactly the same amount.

He would have made 2.75M so his 3.65M is a nice increase (he asked for 4M).

...Mark Prior agreed to a $3.65 million contract for 2006.

Prior had become arbitration eligible when he voided the final year of his original contract signed in 2001. Under the terms of the original deal, he was to make $2.75 million this year. Prior had asked for $4 million, while the Cubs countered with an offer of $3.3 million. The right-hander was 11-7 with a 3.67 ERA in 27 games in 2005.

"We're certainly glad to have it done," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said Friday. "Our stance is always to try to work with the representative, John Boggs, to a conclusion of fairness to avoid the process if we can. This was something we wanted to do, and hopefully Mark will have a great 2006."

That doesn't include his signing or performance bonus. He was slated to make around 3.5+, depending on the exactitudes of the performance bonuses and distribution of the signing bonus.

Unless I'm missing something, Cott's doesn't show that he would have made 3.5M in '06 with the original contract. He had a 4 M signing bonus. It isn't spelled out here but I think the amount was paid out from 2002-2005. He was slated to get extra money in 2006 (under the old contract) for his 2003 Allstar appearance.

* arbitration-eligible after 2005 (asking $4M, offered $3.3M)

* exercised right to void final season (2006) of original contract 11/05 after qualifying for arbitration

* 5 years/$10.5M (2002-06), plus incentives

o $4M signing bonus

o 02:$0.25M, 03:$0.65M, 04:$1.6M, 05:$2M base (incentives to $2.75M), 06:$2M

o 2003 All Star selection increased 2004-06 salaries by $0.5M/season

o additional $0.1M All Star incentive

o Prior may void either of final 2 years (05-06) if he qualifies for arbitration after 2004 or 2005 seasons

* drafted 2001 (1-2), signed major-league contract 8/01

* agent: John Boggs

* ML service: 2.131

So he had his agent to a little extra paperwork and now he can buy a nice new Aston Martin with the difference. good for him.

man the cubs are stingy. remember last year when they wouldnt give zambrano the extra couple hundred thousand.

3.65M is stingy? He could have insisted on going in front of an arbiter for 4M. It was a fair compromise between 3.3M and 4M.

This isn't stinginess at all. It's how all arbitration eligibles work, regardless of organization. Very few actually go to arbitration.

at least he's making more than neifi.

This one drew a loud laugh, which doesn't happen very often with me and message board posts.

This article on pitcher's defense shows why Hendry might hate Walker so much. Only one pitcher converted a lower ratio of ground balls into outs in 2004. He's been below average every year in the league.

Lee and Choi had great range. Neifi has been at least average defensively. You're going to sacrifice A-Ram's lack of range for his bat. I wouldn't have a problem with downgrading Walker's bat for someone like Orlando Hudson if we got an impact bat.

This offseason's free agent market feels like the Bulls getting two top five draft picks in one of the weakest drafts ever.

Nice. I expected a deal with Prior before Zambrano as I am hoping the 2 will be discussing a long term deal.

By the way, welcome aboard!

That puts Walker where most figure he'd be, below average but not at the bottom. Can someone point me to any place where PMR is contextualized more? I understand DER v. predicted, but what does that difference mean in relation to runs allowed?

Prior would have taken home $3.55m in 2006 had he not filed for arbitration (the exact same amount he made in 2005). That's a $2m basic salary, plus $0.75m in performance escalators that kicked in after his 2003 season ($0.5m for the third place finish in Cy Young voting, $0.25m for the All-Star appearance), plus the final $0.8m installment of his signing bonus.

Prior actually will still get that $0.8m signing bonus. On top of that he'll get the $3.65 contract he's just agreed, meaning that he'll end up with an $4.45m sitting in his bank account for this year, an increase of $0.9m relative to what he'd have got had he not opted out of his contract.

Prior will be eligible for free agency after 2008.

This statement drew a shake of the head from me... as if to say why on earth is a statement like this even thinkable. ](*,)

Thanks Guancous. Long time lurker, first time poster. Like most Cub fans, I get most of my Cub info from this site and love reading the boards.
