I think he'll be full time DH at the start of the season at least. If he stays healthy and productive, he could be there the whole year.

I'm not positive though. The A's are looking strong this year.

It will be fun to finally get to see a world series game in person.

Are you moving to the Bronx?

Naah, I'll get to see the finally go down here in Oakland.

FWIW, you have a WAY better chance than I do here in Tampa!

wow dude, that's the worst avatar ever.

But in other news, Thomas for $500k vs. Neifi for $2.5 million. Discuss.

Holy.... :pukel:

To be fair, it's an apples to oranges comparison, mostly. The fact that we gavea 2 yr 2.5m contract to a bench player in general is insane, but Thomas and Perez have nothing in common.

Nice signing by Oak, especially at the price. They'll have a nice surplus and it's a low risk signing.

If they can get a platoon out of him vs.LH'ers, it should help him stay healthy and get the 150-200 ABs. He'll likely hit for less power, but still has one of the best approaches in the game.

.260/.375/.480 is what I think he'll come close to, if his injuries are a thing of the past.

Not a bad investment.

I think he'll play most everyday. I would expect 400-500 PAs if he stays healthy. He did hit 67 of his last 88 homeruns at home though. If he likes the line as rumors say, he can get it out there at the mausoleum.

I don't think Macha would start him everyday, his health likely equates to him being a part-time DH, able to produce in limited roles, but unable to stay healthy enough to absorb a full-time role.

I would assume his max PAs would be 350 and more likely in the 2s.

Forgive my ignorance, but who was the DH for the A's last year?

Hatteberg

Ewww. Not the type of player I'd want as a DH. His slugging is horrific for not fielding a position.

Depends on if Oakland wants to go the defensive route on the OF as Payton, Kotsay, and Bradley is one of the best defensive OFs in MLB. I see him as a part-time player, luckily his health incentives are just as high as his PA incentives.

Agreed, but would they play Payton ahead of Thomas? Shifting Swisher to 1B and Johnson to DH or vice versa.

yea, I think they'll do that some. a lot will probably depend on how thomas feels. I don't think you lose much if anything from payton to swisher btw. The A's need a good outfield defense. If they can stay healthy, they have a great shot at the west this year. they need crosby and harden healthy though.

Healthy, I think they are the West winners easily.

They're young, gifted, 1 year ahead of the curve, and inexpensive. They have a very good chance in the AL West.

They have health concerns, more with position players rather than pitchers (minus Harden).

Their balance reminds me of the '04 Cubs, before injuries and age caught up to them. Oak. has a better chance to stay healthy and have players improve as their core gets more experience given their age.

I see them doing what the '04 Cubs failed to do.

if swisher is more consistent, they get crosby back and add bradley and thomas? That offense goes from average to very good. they really have only one zero, catcher.

34 games and a .315 obp aren't too impressive, but Beane can do no wrong.

Shut up. Beane was criticized on this board for the Loaiza signing. Thomas at 500K is a great signing, and you're boring us with your anti-Beane crusade.

What crusade?

I forgot, that was your first post ever about Beane and the fact that a lot of posters think he's a good GM.

I think he's a good GM too... Just not a god, which apparently makes me anti-Beane & on a crusade. *shrug*

Even if you do think he's a good GM, you apparently have a problem with other people who think he is good. I don't recall anyone thinking Beane was a God either, but when you make stuff up, it makes your arguments better.

And I think signing a player who came over a .900+ OPS season to a cheap contract was a great move. I don't think Beane can do no wrong, but he didn't do any wrong with this signing.
