Cards are going to be in a world of hurt in 07 when Mulder, Suppan, and Marquis are all free agents. Signing three solid free agent pitchers will cost a ton. What would you do if you're the Cards?

a. Sign Marquis to an extension because he's the only pitcher where you have fairly good leverage at this time.

b. Sign Mulder to an extension (you can only pick this option if you think Mulder would go for it).

c. Wait and see approach (i.e. Reyes pans out, hope for Wainwright or another low cost surprise).

Feel free to add other options.

Ack, I don't want to think about this but I'll pick A since I don't think B is an option. That said I don't think the Cardinal org is sold on Marquis.

After what the Cards gave up to get Mulder, It would suck to lose him like that.

Marquis is a bit over rated IMO, I say try to resign Mulder. If Wainwright and Reyes both pan out (big ifs at this early of a stage), then at least they have two decent to good startes in the rotation. Spend the big money on hitter since who knows who Rolen will hold up and how the OF situation will look like.

When is Edmonds contract up?

After this year w/ expensive club option for 07.

Mulder's just going to cost too much in free agency next year and it's not the Cards style to overpay like that. His peripherals are declining and he's not a power pitcher. The Mulder trade was a bad deal, but it still doesn't make sense to overpay for his performance. We'll see how he does this year, I guess. I think there's no chance Mulder doesn't test the market.

He's still under Cubs control for three years, so I guess they can take their shot at him after 2008.

Wait a minute..... didn't they build a new stadium so that payroll wouldn't have to be as big an issue as it was pre-new stadium? I apologize; I digress.

I would re-sign Mulder, and as I said during last season, they should deal Marquis during the off-season. What a difference five years make. Five years ago, people thought the rotation for 2005-2007 would be anchored by Morris, Ankiel, Bud Smith and Chad Hutchinson.

I posted about the new stadium=status quo payroll before. Not a happy camper (or Cards fan). I just don't think there's a chance they'll be able to extend Mulder prior to his free agency. Unfortunately leaves the Cards with few options heading into next year. Once he hits free agency, it's the old Catch 22 where he has a great season and seriously inflates his value or he tanks in which case, why would you want to pay for past performance with declining trends anyway?

Because Alan Benes and Matt Morris were just too dominant for us to resign. They both play for the Yankees now. We just need some arms to fill in around Rick and Bud.

As long as you still have Darryl Kile as your #3 you should be alright

Too soon? Wasn't that like 3 or 4 years ago?

Maybe that explains the strange success of our staff. The ghost of Darryl Kile is on their side.

The Edmonds option for '07 isn't bad. In fact, he'll go from $12 mil in '06 to $10 mil in '07. The buy-out is $3 mil, so they'd be much better off paying the extra $7 mil to keep him. At $10 mil, he'll be a bargain.

Mulder will be over-valued, in my opinion, and the Cards should go a different route. It sounds like Marquis will be in the plans, along with Reyes and Carpenter. Wainwright COULD earn a spot by '07, but I'd hate to count on him, at this point. Suppan might get an extension, at some point. Otherwise, you use the $11 mil that you're paying Suppan and Mulder in '06, and head to the free agent market.
