But the Sox aren't finished in their quest to fortify their 2005 World Series roster. They signed left-handers Javier Lopez and Stephen Randolph, both with major-league experience, to minor-league contracts.

They're also one of six teams interested in signing Jose Macias, who can play five positions and recently won the batting title in the Venezuelan League. Macias batted .254 for the Cubs last season and hit .405 during regular-season play for Caracas.

"The White Sox are an interesting team because Jose respects the manager (Ozzie Guillen), and [third-base coach] Joey Cora has seen him play down there," agent Bob Barad said.

BTW, gotta love Rotoworld's take on the Macias "six teams" news blurb:

The White Sox are one of six teams interested in free agent Jose Macias, according to the Chicago Tribune.

We can only assume that the others are the Atlantic City Surf, the Bridgeport Bluefish, the Long Island Ducks, the Nashua Pride and the Somerset Patriots. The Newark Bears can do better. Jan. 10 - 2:45 am et

'Schadenfreude' is the German word for finding joy in others misfortune I believe.

Watching another team sign Macias is a quickfire way to ensure it happens.

Why are teams interested in Macias? John Erhardt at Baseball Prospectus put it better than I could:

unfortunately, (Macias) fits the accepted definition of what a utility player is: a player who, by virtue of managerial usage patterns, is deemed to be performing a valuable service by competing in a variety of roles, regardless of his success in those roles.

I think that's about right. :D

Let the Gremlin stay in Chicago. :D

You know if he signs with the White Sox he will get one of those cue shot doubles down the line to beat us in one of the inter-league games.

Macias would have been a decent 25th guy it's just that Baker just does not understand that concept.

You are absolutely right. Macias as a 25th man and not as the 1st bat off the bench, substitute CF, or top-of-the-lineup hitter makes some sense. For those Hendry haters out there, I contend that if Baker used the players as they were supposed to be used the team record would have been 8-10 games better. Look at how much of the season was wasted on finding a closer, figuring out other roles in the bullpen, using players like Perez, Patterson, and Macias at the top of the lineup, etc.

I don't argue it. So then: why does Hendry stay with Baker? Why does he not fire a manager who obviously isn't implementing his plan properly? Got to ask the obvious question....

I'll argue it. Just slapping a "25th man" label on a player doesn't excuse him being useless. I think a lot of people have a notion that the 25th roster spot is a special place in the baseball universe where being a non-contributor is OK.

The problem is Hendry employed about 3-4 "25th man" type of players. And he knew Dusty's usage pattern. He saw what Dusty did with Macias, then he went out and gave the guy a raise to come back and do it again, only worse.

You say that until Cedeno struggles and we trade value to the White Sox for Macias...

Well fine then. Macias could be a great 4th starter.

You say THAT until Dusty remembers that Macias is supposed to be able to play anywhere, and pegs him in as the 4th starter in our rotation

Compare Macias to other team's 25th man and he's not as bad as everyone makes him out to be, but compare him to every other team's 10th position player (the way Baker used him) and he's horrible. I will agree that Hendry's biggest fault is not firing Baker or at least insisting that Baker play certain players.
