SportsNetwork[/url]"]Also signed by the Cubs on Tuesday was infielder Augie Ojeda

The offseason from hell gets EVEN WORSE.

Hendry has got to go.

Good God. You want Hendry fired because he signed a guy to play SS in the minor leagues?

It's just the latest in a long line of goofball moves, many of which result in crappy players calling Wrigley Field home.

Why can't we restrict Spring Training invites to people with talent?

But signing Augie to a minor league contract ISN'T a goofball move. It would be if he were likely to make the Cubs' roster, but I think it's safe to say he was signed to provide depth at Iowa. Nothing wrong with that; most teams have some veteran filler at AAA.

There are legitimate reasons for questioning Hendry, but I don't think signing Augie is one of them.

My feelings:

I don't like the Grisson signing, not because I think he's a bad option to give a minor league deal to, or to have as a backup plan for Jones's platoon partner, but more because I fear Dusty will let him have a job he does not deserve and will play him more than is reasonable and part of that time will come at the expense of Murton. As a pure baseball move though, it's not bad. (but would he really accept a job in Iowa as insurance, or was there a handshake deal that he'd be rostered when the time came?)

The Augie deal is meaningless. I can't envision even him getting a job. But if he does, that's just pathetic planning on the Cubs part.

The Restovich deal is the type of move I like to see made, taking a chance on young players with some skills that fit needs.

I wonder if we can say that Restovich was the Twins version of David Kelton. A lot of promise that didn't pan out short term, but maybe a change of scenery re-energizes them to get back on their trajectory.

He's got a better track record than Kelton.

Restovich's minor league career was much better than Kelton's. Kelton cracked an .800 OPS just twice in his minor league career(once in Rookie ball). Restovich was lower than an .800 OPS just twice in his minor league time.

If you want to compare him to Dubois than Kelton, you're better off. He's better defensively but not great at all in the OF, not as much raw power as Dubois and struggles to hit off-speed pitches.

I have no problem with the signing, it's not blocking anyone and they need a RH bat off the bench w/pop.

He's a project on a team that has shown a lack of patience.

This is an interesting co-incidence...

Grissom, .285/.336/.467

Restovich, .281/.336/.467

Those are career splits versus lefties.

Just 146 PA for Restovich, of course.

I wonder if there are any other .336/.467 types that Hendry wants to sign to a minor league contract any time soon.

My personal opinion is that the eleven years nine months difference is what makes one deal a good one, and the other just a pointless one.

Let me rephrase that: why can't we restrict candidates for "veteran filler" to legitimate ballplayers?

This guy has no business being a heartbeat away from Wrigley Field.

As long as they keep him more than a heartbeat away, there is no problem. If he's 3 or 4 heartbeats away, he's a lot like most guys that are that far down the depth chart.
