Ok, I thought this deserved it's own thread. Merge it if need be mods, but according to this site, no deal is imminent and the Orioles and Cubs haven't spoken since Thursday.

Baseball sources said Tuesday the Cubs and Orioles have not spoken since news of the proposed deal was leaked to an Internet site last Thursday. Prior, Corey Patterson and a top prospect, believed to be left-hander Rich Hill, are thought to be part of the preliminary package, although no firm offer has been put on the table while a variety of options are discussed.

The article goes on to discuss the fact that the Orioles want Zambrano and also have interest in Dopirak.

Baltimore reportedly has asked for another hitting prospect in exchange for Tejada and left-hander Erik Bedard, with first base prospect Brian Dopirak's name being mentioned in preliminary talks. Dopirak was ranked as the Cubs' top prospect by Baseball America last year, but fell to No. 9 in the organization after hitting .235 with 16 home runs at Class A Daytona.

This is going to drag on fellas.

That appears to be the new Trib-Sullivan article. [libel] I should have known from the tone. [/libel]

But Hendry's apparent willingness to include Prior in a blockbuster deal may be an indication he's ready to bet his own future - and perhaps that of Dusty Baker as well - that Tejada's immense talent will turn the Cubs' fortunes around quickly.

I'd be a whole lot happier if he weren't betting Prior's future as well.

I still say if Hendry is dead set on this, he should shop Prior to all twenty-nine other teams.

I think he could improve us much better than Tejada.

I don't know what teams would offer for Prior, but a team that thinks they are just an "ace" away might be willing to give us quite a package.

I think-and this isn't just exahustion talking-i really think the Yankees would entertain sending us ARod for Prior.

Your method would seem to be the best if you wanted to maximize player value.

Hate to bring up the Billy Beane wars, but it wasn't just sheer chance that word was out that some or all of the Big 3 would have to be dealt. As far as we know, they weren't declared "untouchable" and then randomly dangled for players who suddenly demanded trades.

Will someone explain to me what the hell the fascination is with Erik Bedard? Because he's a lefty?? The guy is 2 years OLDER than Mark Prior, and doesn't have half the upside. In limited ML time over three seasons, he has a lifetime BAA of nearly 270, and a WHIP of nearly 1.50. And he has an injury history.

I wouldn't swap Rich Hill for this guy straight up. What is Hendry thinking??

The guy is clearly insane.

Vance, I just made this today's trade rumor thread; hope you don't mind.

Don, supposedly we must consider Bedard's 2005 pre- and post-All Star game splits and believe that the pre-ASG split is the true Bedard (as O's fans do). He was injured in the second half.

That doesn't change the fact that he'll be 27 and has 220 kind-of-ok innings vs. 60 very good innings.

Just a though me and my dad had...and believe me I'm against this trade 100%, but do you guys really think that Prior is gonna wanna come back after this season, especially now with all the talk of Hendry trying to deal him now? Maybe it would be smart to try and open talks up with the rest of the league and see what else we could get, because if I were Prior, and all of these talks were about moving me when I'm a huge favorite with the fans, I wouldn't wanna come back after my contract ran out.

He has no choice but to remain with the Cubs for three (or maybe it was two) more years. MLB rules. He can't leave for free agency until his arby years are over.

I think it is fairly pointless to speculate as to what Prior will want to do three years from now.

Oh okay, I forgot about arbitration, I just remembered that in 01 he signed a 5-year deal, my fault.

I am actually for this trade.

Before I lose everyone again (since I actually like the Jones acquistion) I think we have to take a step back and realize what we would be getting.

We would be left with a top 5 in baseball offensive infielder at all positions. Add that to a top 5 catcher, top 5 CF and we have a pretty strong lineup. Yes we would be trading a top tier pitcher but this is something that can be recovered from, both interally and via trades.

Personally, I think that by offering a player of Prior's caliber it shows that Hendry is not afraid of making a big deal. Look at the Nomar trade from Boston's perspective. Their GM traded away one of the faces of the franchise and got better based on what they recieved. It is entirely plausible that even though we would be trading a valuable player, we are recieving quality in return.

What I would like to see is a Prior/Hill/Brownlie trade for Tejada and Bedard. Then a subsequent trade with Boston where Patterson and Cedeno would be exchanged for Clement & Graffino. That would solidify our rotation more and allow for a return of apopular player both to the fans and to the rest of the rotation.

Posted
I think the Red Sox would move Clement, but I'm not sure what the price would be. Zito would be very costly.

Either way, neither would be an adequate replacement for Prior. Zito comes close, but certainly hasn't had the type of success he had a few years ago.

I think its safe to say that Levine duped us. Shmuck!

:axe:

When the search tool is back up and running, I'm really starting to think that we need to document the number of imminent deals that Levine has discussed that didn't come through. He's not a particularly reliable source, though he does give us some fuel for the hot stove (albeit the dried cow dung variety).

Was Levine the only source for this story? I seem to recall ESPN, Baltimore papers, etc. were all saying the same type of thing. I don't remember Levine breaking the A’s or Bsox trade angles.

Ken Rosenthal was the first person to report on the story last week. From there, everyone else starting picking up the story.

He's generated at least two enoormous threads on this bd. since May (Dunn and Tejada). I guess what irritates me the most is he never seems to get called out by the station (or anyone else) for these inaccurate reports, and/or never seems to explain himself when they turn out to be inaccurate.

That's most sports writers though. It's that whole "standing by your story" journalism.

If you think about it, has there been any sports writer (Internet, radio, newspapers, etc.) that we would say was right on the money at least 80 percent of the time?
