"It's a different game now. The ball's more lively, the ballparks are a joke; you can't pitch inside. ... The owners could save millions of dollars by taking the pitcher off the mound and just put a tee out there."

Seriously, what makes his era any more valid than the current "live ball" era? The run scoring environment was much higher in the '27 - '35 era than it has been through the "juiced" era. Wasn't that one of the "golden ages" of the sport?

Has the game changed since Goose played? Absolutely. Is it worse? Matter of preference.

Old timers of every generation complain about the lack of funamentals and how much better their brand of baseball was. Bold prediction - players of today will be complaining about same thing in 20 or 30 years.

I'd much rather see the ball softened and the parks bigger, the RF line at Yankee stadium and older parks with smaller dimensions should obviously be grandfathered in. But, the dimensions at Minute Maid (Crawford Boxes) as well as the GABP are too small and should've been larger.

I'd much rather watch a game built more around pitching and player execution on offense that extends beyond hitting the ball 450 feet.

Manufacturing runs is a concept that doesn't work well in today's climate, but it is better to watch, IMO.

The "live ball" has probably had a similar effect to baseball as the shot clock has to the NBA. The resurgence of the home run hitters has brought more fans to baseball. I'm not going to comment on the quality of those additional fans, but they have come and with it has produced more revenue for the game.

Didn't you hear?? OZZIEBALL~!~!~!~! won the world series. PITCHING AND DEFENSE!!! MOVING RUNNERS OVER!!!!! BUNTING!!!! TRYING FOR ONE RUN RATHER THAN 4!!!!

I didn't read the article because like others in this thread I'm sick of old-timers whining, especially in Gossage's case when he's doing it to further his HOF agenda, but does anyone else remember pretty much the same quote from Gossage last year? Is this an annual thing with him or are they quoting him from the past?

Did Joe Morgan take over Goose's body there for a minute?

Building ballparks with big dimensions sounds nice and all, but good luck signing any bigtime hitters to your team. Eventually, they all bend to the free agents' wills, as we saw with the fences in Detroit and US Cellular being brought in, and the threat of the same at PetCo.
