I know everyone is worried about what players are going to play what positions like SS, 2nd, and RF. However, does anyone else think that if we went out and got at least a good 3rd pitcher instead of a middle of the road RF like it looks like they are going to get, then they would win more games. Like a Washburn who seems like he is going to get signed at a decent price. I just think that there are a lot more viable candidates for a good pitcher then a good position player. [/b]

I just read somewhere that Washburn was going to sign with Seattle for 4 years/$35-40 mil. Doesn't sound like such a decent price to me.

around 8 million a year? Yea thats a lot of money for a 3rd pitcher on a staff, but what are we paying Maddux 10 million a year to be the fifth starter. Washburn would have been huge if he continued to pitch like he did away from Home over his stay with the Angels. He would have helped Barret because he doesn't allow stolen bases and seemed like he would have won a lot more games for the Cubs then say Cliff Floyd.

With the contracts being passed out to Washburn/Morris/Loaiza types, I find it hard to blame Jim Hendry for not being real anxious to trade Rich Hill and/or Jerome Williams.

As things currently stand, it will be a spring training competition between Hill and Williams for the fifth rotation spot, correct? I am assuming the Cubs are committed to Rusch for the 4 spot.

Hendry has been quoted as saying something to the effect that, ideally, Hill will be at Iowa. I think the job is Williams' to lose.

This is what I don't understand with Hendry then. If you are correct, why WOULDN'T he move Hill in the right trade, then? I mean, if he is writing off Hill for a year at AAA from the get-go, then what are the chances Hill makes a significant impact in 2007, as a 27-YEAR OLD rookie?

Goodness, sell now while his value is highest.....

He is willing to move Hill in the right trade. Just maybe your idea of the right trade and his are different.

I think he would trade Hill in a package for Abreu or Tejada and there is evidence to support that according to Bruce Miles.

For Huff or Wilkerson, he is sticking to his guns, and, for now, I don't blame him. Do you?

Kazuhisa Ishii - S - Mets

Mets released LHP Kazuhisa Ishii.

They couldn't just wait and non-tender him tomorrow? Now that he's been released, he won't be eligible to play for the Mets until May. Of course, that's not going to be an issue. Dec. 19 - 4:12 pm et

Kaz Ishii was released by the Mets after a pretty bad year. His first two were pretty good and he's a lefty. I'm pretty sure he's the guy who got his skull cracked on a comebacker a year or two ago (which might explain the off year) so I think he may be worth a look for a minor league contract? Anyone agree? Are there going to be any SP non-tenders better than this tomorrow? I think JH should jump on this one.

He's always had horrible control...over six walks per nine innings in each of his first two seasons (over 5.6 BB/9 IP for his MLB career). His strikeout rate has dropped off considerably, and he susceptable to the longball. He's simply not a good pitcher at all.

He might be an interesting arm out of the bullpen.

At most I'd sign Ishii for the minimum, but really I wouldn't want to go more than an NRI. The Cubs, for one, don't need anymore pitchers with control issues. The Yankees should try to sign him though, they can afford the mistake, and have a need for arms.

Do you mean interesting meaning "he might be able to figure it out" or interesting meaning "let's see how far this one goes"? Because I'd be more inclined to take the latter.
