"Hendry has had an offer of 2 young prospects for Wilson of Washington for about 2 weeks now. When he was told that Wilson was a free agent Hendry quipped "I knew that" and stormed off grabbing the last 8 Krispy Kremes that were on the counter."

Looks like the Cubs are down to one proposal.

“Last Wednesday in Dallas was a terrific day for the Cubs,” Hendry gushed. “Our two biggest needs in the winter were obviously adding quality people in the bullpen in front of (closer) Ryan Dempster and addressing the largest deficiency we had in the leadoff spot.”

Ummmmm....He does realize we don't currently have a RF, right? Unless he considers Patterson or Mabry to be it.

No one considers Mabry the RF. Even Dusty ruled it out.

This is true. But being desperate for a RF and acting desperate for one are two different things. If Hendry publicly states he really needs something, he is going to get gouged.

Having said that, Wilson or Jones will be our RF in 2006, I fear.

Something tells me that other GM's aren't going to be stupid enough to believe that we don't need a RF.

What do you expect Hendry to say.

"You know, I have an obligation to build a winning team, but more importantly, I have to make the fans happy immediately. We are in awful shape here. Right now, we could not field a weaker club. We have no right fielder and I have no idea what I am going to do to get one. If I play Neifi in right, then what do I do for a second baseman? See what I mean about awful shape? I have no offers out there. I haven't talked to any more free agents. I missed the boat on the guys who signed with other teams. I guess I am going to have to stop talking about how well we are doing because everybody sees through me. I think I will just have to make a last-minute desperation trade for some old, over-priced, piece-of-trash bum and just send the other team a whole bunch of our prospects. You know, the prospects who really aren't very good and have about a snowball's chance of ever playing n the majors, anyway."

Does that sound better and make you feel warm and fuzzy?

How can the Cubs be in that bad of shape ? The proposed budget still has about 18-20 mil. to spend. How can we down to the options of Jones or Encarnacion? Something has to happen here. I hope!!

Wow. There are tactiful ways to say that you are still looking to upgrade. Besides, I'm not saying he isn't, I'm saying I have a problem with him saying, “Our two biggest needs in the winter were obviously adding quality people in the bullpen in front of (closer) Ryan Dempster and addressing the largest deficiency we had in the leadoff spot" when there is a huge freaking gaping hole the size of the grand canyon in RF.

If he's just posturing, fine. But I'm starting to think he's not. He's already said (allegedly) that Hill and Pie are untouchable. Now he brings in (and overpays for) Pierre and claims (I know, he could be posturing again) that he wants to extend him and signs Rusch to a two year deal. I can't wait until the "we got outbid" excuse comes out in Feb/March after we've wasted millions on the likes of Neifi and Rusch. That will be sweet.

I think that saying that Hill and Pie being untouchable is brilliant. If he can get more for Hill than what a one-pitch, once-around-the-league, too-old prospect is worth by saying he is untouchable, then God bless him.

By the way, I think that calling Pierre, "Slappy" is derrogatory and unfair. Watch him play. Was Podsednik's game in the newspaper what made the Sox get going last year or was it his game on the field. There are way too many people on this board with their heads all screwed up with arcane statisics. Try spending a little time watching a few game and get your head out of the Baseball Abstract.

You're right. I've never watched, or even played baseball. How did you guess?

Me either, can't stand to watch.

Oh, and I never lived in Miami nor have I ever seen Slappy play.

One next to last thing, Slappy is not deragatory in any way, it describes his hitting approach. But I don't know that for sure as I've never seen him play.

Last thing, Slappy is not Podsednic and the White Sox are not the Cubs, just for the record.

And here I thought Slappy was a reference to his cap being knocked sideways.

Watch baseball? You're having a laugh. Reading boxscores is much more fun. And it doesn't waste three hours of the day. I've perfected the art of getting everything out of the boxscore in two minutes. That means I can then spend 2 hours 58 minutes running statistical regressions.

In this day and age you have to get used to multi-tasking. I'd recommend that you do your statistical regressions while having a game playing in the background. Might be a good idea to get a haircut too while you're at it.

I'm not sure if you're kidding but Wilson is a FA so no prospects would be needed o acquire him. According to the Tribune, the Cubs talked to his agent before the Winter Meetings but he isn't a top option.

If the Cubs exhaust their search for a left-handed hitter, they could sign Washington free agent Preston Wilson to a one-year deal. Wilson's agent has informed the Cubs they're his top choice and that he would love to play for Dusty Baker. But the sides haven't spoken since before the winter meetings, and Wilson remains a secondary option.

I was joking Bh05. A better writer would have got that point across.

I wouldn't mind Wilson but that would make this team very right handed so I see Murton riding the pines yet again.

Maybe I missed it but the article mentions that Hendry has two trade proposals for a right fielder pending - one of which has been pending for 2 weeks and the other that even the Cubs consider a longshot. Any ideas as to the teams/individuals involved?

At the winter meetings, it was suggested that the non-Pierre trade proposal Hendry had on the table may have been with the Devil Rays for Huff and/or Lugo.

I think the trade that was on the table was folded up and put away at the Winter Meetings so the other team doesn't even know the trade exists.

I never doubted the ability of Hendry to be patient and wait for a deal to happen. Sometimes he loses the deal when someone jumps in with a better offer but unless it's a player he really wants like Pierre....he seems to wait around and let things develop. Is that a good thing? We'll see.

Here we have the first on-topic post in the thread, deep into page 2. :)

I think the other offer on the table is for Wilkerson myself.
