interesting stuff from hendry. makes you wonder what hendry really thinks of corey.

Hendry said he has been trying to acquire Pierre since the end of the 2003 season, during which Pierre hit .305 in the regular season and .301 in the post season as the Marlins beat the Cubs in the National League Championship series and the New York Yankees in the World Series.

Maybe he was planning on putting Pierre in Left and then trading Alou.

For what it's worth, here's Zip's projection for Corey Patterson for '06.....

Name AVG OBP SLG G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS
Patterson .252 .298 .418 146 564 73 142 23 4 21 68 36 147 23 8

If he bunts, walks (Tim I believe thought [and correctly over the long term] that CPAT's walks would increase) gets that kind of production I'll play him in the 8 hole 145+ games next year.

21 hr????????????

I'd take that with Tejeda..those are Burnitz-like #'s

Why not? We're not going to get ANYTHING in return for him. He can be a nice defensive substitute, pinch runner and a spot starter.

I just hope this offseason gave him a chance to clear his head. In my opinion, that's his only problem. He swung at early pitches in the count because he was afraid of failure and striking out....all mental. There was a game last year (can't recall which one) and a poster on this board noticed it too, where he looked flat-out scared at the plate. He then went on to strike out in 4 pitches.

I hope he took Dusty's advice and visited a sports psychologist. I honestly think that would do him wonders.

I think the Cubs organization screwed him up by insisting he be a leadoff hitter. We should have realized that he wasn't one. I think that was what messed up his head last year. Corey will be a middle of the order hitter for some team eventually. I really like the point Paul Sullivan made in his article today, which i believe has its own thread, in which he says:

But Patterson's potential, despite a .215 season and a demotion to Triple A, gives Hendry pause when considering a trade. A handful of teams, including Texas and Arizona, briefly showed interest in Patterson, but the Cubs would rather give him another chance than deal him for low-level prospects. As Exhibit A they can point to Derrek Lee, who hit .233 and .206 for Florida in 1998 and '99, when he was about Patterson's age, before blossoming in his late 20s

That gives me even a bit more hope that Corey can and will bounce back.

From June on last year Corey hit considerably below .200. However, from the beginning of 2003 through May of last year, his avg was .278 with 47 HR's. Given the production of a lot the names mentioned as possible RF candidates next year, I really hope the Cubs keep him and give him another shot, even if it is as a 4th outfielder filling in occasionally for the other OFs or as a defensive replacement for Murton or possibly whomever we get to play RF.
