BK has written a new article on the trade for Juan Pierre. Here is a summary:

The highlights:

  • Pierre will probably be a good leadoff hitter in 2006.
  • He has some nice skills; great speed and an extraordinary ability to make contact.
  • He also has some pretty big holes in his game; lack of power and a fairly unpredictable OBP are chief among them.
  • As much has been said of Pierre's basrunning and defense, neither looks to be a big issue. They won't be big positives, but they aren't really be negatives, either.
  • We gave up three promising young pitchers in return. None of them are sure things, but all have a good shot at having solid MLB careers.
  • The biggest cost of this trade is the opportunity cost. Pinto and Nolasco in particular were prime trade fodder, and now Hendry has far less of a chance of making a significant upgrade via trade.

BK has a new article out. Sorry it's taken me a couple days to get it online. It's been a bit crazy this weekend. ;)

Nice article BK.

What would make this an even trade? Only one of the 3 pitchers sent to Florida having a decent career? The kicker IMO is that we do not know what the teams that had Wikerson and Bradley were asking for or if Hendry valued Pierre more than those two players, we can assume he did but we don't know for sure.

The beauty part is if any of the 3 are any good the Cubs can just trade for them in 4 years when Florida has another fire sale after they win another World Series. :D

How would Pierre fare in the AL? His ability to advance baserunners is so pathetic that it seems to me his value would be greatly diminished if he weren't batting behind a pitcher, as he does in the NL.

One thing BK has to give a lot more weight in his analysis of the trade is how Pierre stacks up to the alternative options (three better centre fielders were out there this winter: Mike Cameron, Brad Wilkerson and Milton Bradley) in terms of probable performance and probable cost. The answer, I think, is awfully.

i think it's a good summary of the trade, but i have to nitpick: derrek lee had 199 hits in his 2005 season, 99 of them being XBH. he did not have twice as many singles as he did XBH.

You beat me to it!

If we're speaking French, it should be Msr., not Mr. :D

not to mention the fact that Bon jour is 2 words, no?

non.

Oui, je suis d'accord.

Avec qui? Poudre ou Cuse? Tu m'as confondu.

C'est "bonjour", c'est un mot, pas deux.
