I believe someone selected Juan Mateo from the Cubs in the Rule 5 draft this morning. I didn't hear Brandon Sing's name come up.

The Cubs selected pitcher Carlos Jan from the Orioles in the AAA portion of the draft.

Cubs just selected Aaron Rifkin from Seattle's roster. Anyone?

First Baseman Aaron Rifkin? Um, sure, that makes sense...

26 years old, good power, bad average, lefty 1B.

No one took Sing or Rohlicek?

Shocking!

The Cubs should have taken Sing. His numbers look better than that Rifkin dude's...

Sing is on the AA roster, so he can be drafted now. Rohlicek was on the AAA roster so he's safe now. (According to cubs.com rosters.)

I'm sure those rosters are out of date. Pretty sure Sing is safe.

Sure is a lot of passing going on now. Even Florida just passed...

Florida doesn't have any room left for anyone. :D

Does anyone know anything about Juan Mateo? Looking at his stats at Daytona, he had about 10 K's/9 IP and has pretty good control. He's 22 years old.

Bo Fuliniti, the former Daytona Cubs broadcaster (he recently accepted a position with the Stockton Ports), answered some questions about Mateo here. He did the Q&A for NSBB in early August.

FINALLY, AND JUAN MATEO: HE IS THE WILDCARD OF THE BUNCH BECAUSE THERE IS NO TELLING HOW FAR HE MIGHT GO. WE MOVED HIM FROM THE BULLPEN TO THE ROTATION ABOUT TWO MONTHS AGO AND THE RESULTS HAVE BEEN MIXED. IT'S TAKEN HIM A LITTLE WHILE TO BUILD UP THE ARM STRENGTH TO GO 6 OR 7 FULL FRAMES, BUT HE IS SLOWLY GETTING THERE. AS ALWAYS, THROWING STRIKES IS KEY FOR HIM, BUT HIS OUTPITCH IS A FILTHY SLIDER THAT HE THROWS LOW AND AWAY TO RIGHT-HANDED BATTERS, AND HE HAS GOTTEN HIMSELF OUT OF A LOT OF TROUBLE THIS SEASON WITH THAT PITCH. KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED FOR HIS NUMBERS AT THE END OF THE SEASON...THEY SHOULD BE VERY RESPECTABLE.

AS FAR AS MATEO, HE IS A HUGE QUESTION MARK. HIS FASTBALL IS SLIGHTLY ABOVE AVERAGE, BUT HIS SLIDER IS HIS TICKET TO THE NEXT LEVEL OF THE ORGANIZATION, AND HE WILL GET A TRUE TEST IN THE SOUTHERN LEAGUE. IF HIS NUMBERS CONTINUE TO RISE THAN THERE IS NO REASON NOT TO BELIEVE HE WOULD GET A SHOT IN ABOUT THREE YEARS.

There's been other discussion of Mateo in the Minor Leagues Forum, but it would be difficult to track down without the search function.

Cubs.com article is up with some brief quotes from Fleita.

Lost in minor league portions:

LHP Yorkin Ferreras (Tampa Bay)

RHP Victor Ramos (Boston)

LHP Andy Santana (San Diego)

IF Aaron Sisk (San Francisco)

Drafted in minor league portions:

LHP Carlos Jan (Baltimore)

RHP Geivy Garcia (San Diego)

1B Aaron Rifkin (Seattle)

Cubs have traded Rifkin to Colorado for a PTBNL.

In the third round, the Cubs selected first baseman Aaron Rifkin from Seattle's system but he was then traded to the Colorado Rockies for a player to be named later. Fleita said that player would be chosen during Spring Training.

Yikes, I was starting to think Jan was a decent pickup, high K's with a lot of walks, then I found out he's 26 and hasn't reached AA.

Garcia was bad repeating Low A at age 23. Roster fodder.

How did I just now realize how good a season Mateo had in Daytona? Is his stuff nonexistent?

Uh, don't these guys have to be on the 25-man all year? There is no way this happens. They must be trying to trade them or something. Someone please enlighten me.

They don't have to be on the 25 man if they're taken in the Minor League phase.

How many PTBNL do the Cubs have coming?

3 I believe... 1 here, 1 for Leicester, and 1 for Van Buren.
