He did file at the beginning of the off-season last year. We had to sign him before whatever the date is where you can't negotiate with your FAs anymore until May 1 unless you offered them arbitration.

Nomar was indeed a FA. He reportedly had a multiyear offer with another team but turned it down and came back to the Cubs on a one year deal for $8MM.

Don't know how many have signed since Baker has been here, but, I have yet to hear any free agent say that they have signed with the Cubs because of him.

Walker, Hawkins, Maddux, and Nomar are pretty much it as far as I can tell.

 

You could also toss Williamson and Dempster on that list if you want to.

Don't know how many have signed since Baker has been here, but, I have yet to hear any free agent say that they have signed with the Cubs because of him.

 

In all fairness, a couple of guys have mentioned him as being part of the reason they signed here, including one of the relievers we signed this offseason (I don't recall which). No one I would call major though.

All of those guys were "hot commodities" in the year they hit the market. Shows how bad the Cubs have been at the FA game; what success the team has had has almost exclusively come via trades. Of that entire list above, the only signings that you can say were somewhat of a success were Dawson of course, probably Alou and Tapani, definitely Myers and Beck, maybe Flash.

It seems to me that God dislikes Chicago sports in general. The last really great break I can think of that went a Chicago team's way was when Portland drafted Sam Bowie. :D That one still makes me laugh!

 

But for once, the Cubs seemingly have a fair amount of money to spend in the offseason. And what happens? The crappiest free agent class in recent memory. ](*,)
