Juan Pierre - OF - Marlins

The Nationals have been discussing Juan Pierre with the Marlins, though there doesn't appear to be a fit between the two teams.

It's possible a third team could get involved in the talks. The Cubs remain the favorites for Pierre. Dec. 5 - 11:45 pm et

We need to put ourselves into this trade. Pierre to the Nats. Wilkerson to the Cubs. Some prospects from Nats and Cubs to the Marlins.

We should have gone after Bradley...

Maybe he's afraid to take on a reclamation project. Say what you will about Pierre but he plays most everyday and if Hendry has his way, he's our new CF. On the other hand, Bradley played in 75 games last year. In fact, I was shocked to see that he's never played 150 games in a season (not more that 141 actually with his second highest being 101games).

Wilkerson would be nice but I think it's a pipe dream.

So you would give up Pie for Pierre as rumored?

Is it a pipe dream because he is unavailable, or because you expect Hendry to continue his off season, uh, strategy (of doing nothing).

No but then again Jim might not either. I only say that because Pie is suppose to be our CF in 2007 (maybe). So given that fact I wouldn't give him up for a guy one year from free agency. Of course, it is possible that they can negotiate another deal where Hendry overwhelms them with prospects he's not as high on. The Pie stipulation may not even be a fact.

I guess I have resigned myself to having him as our CF until/unlesssome other team takes him off the market (a la the Dodgers). I'm much more curious about RF and 2B and or SS.

She said pipe dream, not screaming nightmare.

The Marlins aren't getting Pie. Hendry may be a moran but he likes Pie and he's not giving up our top prospect for a light-hitting CF from a team that's in firesale mode.

I know he's available but I haven't seen or heard anything about the Cubs having interest in him. We all know Hendry has spoken publically about his desire to get Pierre.

Quick, someone go convince Hendry that Wilkerson can run really, really fast

Really? There's been several reports from different outlets about the Cubs being interested in Wilkerson.

No, I can't say that I remember reading anything about Wilkerson for Cubs CF. I do however like the new Tribarticle about one-stop shopping with the Devil Rays for Lugo, Huff, and Gaithright. It isn't perfect but it addresses most of our needs in a nice package. Plus it elimates Pierre and the Marlins' costly demands. Then maybe we can get another starter.

That cracked me up too. Marketing will have a blast trying to get those closet Chicagoland D-Rays fans to fill the stands to see some of their franchise's all-time greats move on.

Why don't the Cubs just sign Lofton and just get it over with? I'm not saying he's great but he would make a lot of sense.

That part should tell you why he's not a Cub. It should tell you why a lot of things haven't happened yet.

He's also 38. Eventhough he had a resurgent year (in 101 games) I'm not sure I go with him while young legs are available.

Philly won't offer arbitration to Lofton, so there's no reason for anyone to sign him right now, doing so would simply be wasting a draft pick. Once the deadline passes, then you'll see teams start picking up some of the less desirable free agents like Lofton, Burnitz, Encarnacion and the like.

I'd agree with that if the Cubs got a huge upgrade in right and kept Walker.

Bowden loves Patterson, right? Send the him to the Nats, the Nats & Cubs send prospects to the Marlins, and the Marlins send Pierre to the Cubs. He's not great, but he's worth Corey Patterson, imo.

It's not the deal I'd do, but if Hendry is hell-bent on Pierre, this is the most palatable.

From Jayson Starks column on Pierre being the next to be moved:

According to various sources who have had conversations with the Marlins' delegation, Florida has asked the Cubs for their top prospect, center fielder Felix Pie -- a potential deal-breaker. . .

"Somebody is going to have to move a hell of a [young player] to get this guy," said an official of one team involved in these discussions. "If not, there are so many teams, somebody else will give up that [kind of player]."

Later in the article he says:

• The Cubs have targeted four potential leadoff men to replace Furcal on their drawing board, according to teams that have spoken with them. Those four are Pierre, Tampa Bay's Julio Lugo, Washington's Brad Wilkerson and Tampa Bay's Joey Gathright. Because the Cubs have made the leadoff spot their No. 1 priority -- as opposed to any particular position -- they haven't locked themselves into a pursuit of any one member of that group. The Cubs have no interest in Damon, according to one Cubs official.
