Cubs, Giants Discussing Nico Hoerner Trade

Jeff Passan of ESPN is reporting that "the San Francisco Giants are aggressively pursuing a second baseman" and names Nico Hoerner as a target.

    Cubs Video

It's been a few weeks since we've had any updates on the San Francisco Giants interest of Nico Horner. A recent report suggests that interest may be getting bigger and, with the recent signing of Alex Bregman, the Chicago Cubs utility infielder is more of a movable asset.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that "the San Francisco Giants are aggressively pursuing a second baseman" and names Hoerner as a target.

Though he logged innings primarily at shortstop in 2025, Hoerner has long been a utility man and can play the Keystone. Not particularly known for his power, Oracle Park would likely sap the little bit that he has, though he is always a threat on the base path. Over seven seasons with the Cubs he has been a slightly above average hitter with a .742 OPS and a 103 wRC+. There's always the possibility that Matt Shaw could be another candidate, though there has been no indication that his name has been brought up in any trade talks with the Giants or otherwise.

Do you think the Cubs should move on from one of Hoerner or Shaw? Let us know what you think in the comments!

Trade Hoerner and lose his marvelous running 'round 3rd and home?  Oh hell no.

Nico is from the Bay Area and perhaps wants to go there. I would first offer him an extension which he deserves. He was by far the most consistent Cub, both on offense and defense which was amazing. He has speed and few strikeouts. The package would have to be overwhelming and I don't think SF has enough. He is a Cub treasure.

I agree on all this Victor.   I don't think their hot shot AAA pitcher is the overwhelming get it would take.  At least not in my opinion and I don't think Jed's either.

I don’t think Nico will be traded. But, if he is, I don’t see SF as the team to get him. The only way he ends up in SF is if they are involved in some kind of 3 team deal. Giants do not have anyone the Cubs would want, IMO, for Nico.

I really don't like some of clickbait headlines NSBB is putting out lately. Keep it on the news page if you have to do it, but the forums are sacrosanct ground.

Just reading fans comments in other places . Giants fans think Luis Matos and Whisenhunt would get them Nico . Cubs fans are asking for Logan Webb 😂

Who is asking for Logan Webb, other than mentioning his name as the only thing the Giants could possibly offer to "overwhelm" the Cubs for Nico Hoerner. I dont think anyone is legitimately saying Hoerner is worth Webb.

Rosenthal floated a Peyton Tolle for Hoerner trade. This kind of a trade would be one I'd have to think heavily about. On one hand, it unquestionably makes the Cubs worse in 2026. Shaw might be a 3 win fWAR 2b, but it's a bit "theoretical". You could probably go find a middle infielder on a $6m deal as a backup, maybe you bring back Willi Castro or something on a 1/$8m or something, but you're a worse team on paper.

On the other end, I think Peyton Tolle is a stud. A LHP with a 36 K% in Triple-A, big velo and has always had strong walk-against numbers. His fastball is a killer and the Cubs love this kind of arm. And you could be looking at a rotation of the future of Cabrera, Horton, Wiggins and Tolle. Essentially flipping from the "old, low velo" rotation the Cubs had as recently as 2024 to one of extreme youth and velo.

The odds of the Sox trading one of their young arms probably just went up...

I wonder even if the Red Sox came in with an overpay of an offer if Hoyer would even do it. Everyone talks about how Nico is from the west and probably wants to go out there to be closer to family and any big trade Hoyer has made has seemingly involved some kind of thought process into the team his player is going to.

That is interesting. But the Giants have no one of interest.

One for one? Wonder if there is a way to add Duran or Abreu in the deal. Give up Alcantara or even Mo. Get a proven bat who plays right. I am still skeptical of any Nico trade, but if they did get a potential stud pitcher that is hard to pass on.

I do not think there is any way to add either of those in. I'd say I think it's unlikely the Red Sox actually add Tolle in.

Just want to be blown away and also help this years team. Funny, it always seems like a great idea to trade a guy in his last year if you get a great deal. But then when it is actually offered it gets hard to do. Not that Tolle was actually offered.

As a counterpoint, he just sent (Canadian) Owen Caissie to the wasteland that is the Miami Marlins.

The Red Sox make a lot of sense for Shaw , he's from Mass. Is he enough to get Duran or Abreau?  Either one of those Gold glovers in the outfield with Armstrong & Happ would be a pitchers dream.

Yes, how could anyone from Canada see the appeal in Miami?  Certainly not in January either

Keep Nico if he cant get you someone like Tolle. We're talking about a 5-6 war player for 12m bucks.

I read a lot of comments on x and other places of people who  think Cubs should get Webb ( seriously ) . I wasn’t talking about this board

Cassie isn’t a veteran beloved Cub. He was traded to a place he can play every day in the majors. He should be very happy.

Bregman to wear #3, since Nico wears #2.

I choose to believe that this is a sign Nico isn't going anywhere.

Especially when he's one of the best players in MLB at his position and you have an opportunity to play for something meaningful NOW.

I’m with you. I don’t want to trade him either. However, if the Mariners get involved they have a lot of interesting prospects.
