Chicago Cubs Have "Renewed Interest" In Alex Bregman

PJ Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic are reporting that the Chicago Cubs had a "renewed interest" in Alex Bregman.

With the Chicago Cubs seemingly out of the Kyle Tucker sweepstakes, they are setting their sights on another highly sought-after free agent.

PJ Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic are reporting that the Chicago Cubs had a "renewed interest" in Alex Bregman. They pursued the superstar third baseman last year before he signed with the Boston Red Sox. It's been reported that the Cubs' ownership group had greenlit a four-year, $115 million contract with opt-outs a year ago; however, it's not clear what budget they've okayed for 2025. MLBTR predicts Bregman will net $160 million over six years.

Bregman finished the year with an OPS of .821 across 114 games. He hit 18 home runs and scored 64 runs, while adding one stolen base. His advanced metrics include a wOBA of .356 and a wRC+ of 125, indicating an above-average performance relative to the league. Bregman produced a total of 0 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) and 1 Outs Above Average (OAA). The veteran infielder was acquired by Boston as a free agent in February 2025. In all, his season was worth 3.5 Wins Above Replacement (WAR).

How much should the Cubs pay for Bregman? Let us know in the comments!

I guess so. But we still can't get seasoned dudes like Bregman because we need to increase our pitching skill with moderately new dudes who have the perfect balance between young age and cognizance on the field.

Off-topic, but Rizzo holds a special place for me. I wish he had returned despite my philosophy for the team, but at least he is an honorary Cub retiree.

And I think PCA is immature and emotional, but we need him due to the strict necessity of lowering the age with people who can be decent--or claim to be.

    Nico needs to go, bro.

I defended you earlier. But now I have to ask….. what the hell are you talking about? Why does Nico have to go? Your first post wasn’t the dumbest I have ever read, but your collection of comments is bordering on pure nonsense.

    A two-part question:
    1. How many second baseman in MLB do you think are better than Nico Hoerner?
    2. How many position players do you think are better than Nico Hoerner in general?

The Cubs need to try to extend Nico.  A couple of months ago, my brother got a puppy.  He asked me for a good name for the pup.  I said Nico.  My brother named the dog Nico!  My brother got a little worried about  the Nico trade.  He's not a huge Cubs fan or baseball in general, but because of me, he knows most of the Cubs players, and he loves Nico's defense.

Anyway, seriously, I really want Nico to stay after the next season.  For that matter, I also want Shaw to stay.  Getting Bregman is nice, but if Nico or Matt has to go, I wouldn't want Bregman.

Careful, he’s almost 30. His playing days are coming to an end soon. Definitely should not extend one of the best 2B in the game at his age.

One of the most valuable players on the team last year. Can play 2b or SS as good as just about anyone else in the league. Doesn't hit for power, but certainly hits for average and has great speed on the bases. Smart player. One of my absolute favorites.

So, why does he need to go, bro?

I think it's all based on opinion. I think we need to trade hitting power for pitching power and keep PCA--he has the potential to be a Rizzo, just more... unfiltered, right?

I actually have admired Nico, and don't deny how good he is. But the fact is that our pitchers are sore and we are not being sustainable... for 2032.

Oh, really? I don't use AI. I'm just the weird mix between the intellectual and the sports guy, so naturally, my posts will reflect the mix of good grammar and some vernaculars.

First of all, I'm not denying his prowess and I don't dispute the stats. I just think that for the future (not for the present, definitely not), he needs to go. He's 28, and that's considered aging. He's already reached his statistical "peak" and he will likely become a chore in the next 5-7 years. He's consistent, which is the exact opposite of PCA, but I believe that he does not fit the Cubs chemistry--in the sense that he is only increasing the average age, not decreasing it.

We need pitching power--all of our pitchers are rather inconsistent and are so different from the age of Hendricks and Lester--my two favorites. We need to build reputable, young pitchers who share a balance between consistency and unpredictability. If we trade Nico for two or three of these prospects, we will increase the sustainability of the team.

I'll compile the stats later and show you. I'm attempting to quantity sustainability in direct comparison with the Milwaukee Brewers, a similar team and who also beat us last year. Through this analysis, I'll determine how to increase sustainability while not entirely compromising temporary power.

And I'm not using AI. I write this way, so get used to it.

The problem is that when there's a dissenting opinion or something that, heaven forbid, is in line with "Project 2032," people will cry in terror. They're saving Matt Boyd for the inability to lower our age cohort. 49K+ posts makes them able to exert their opinions on me. Nothing short of ridiculous.

Don't worry... this is what I get EVERYWHERE... but I actually am a real person.

The thing people don't understand is that I'm the intersection between the "AI" (people do call me ChatGPT) and the "sports dude." It's rarely seen in others, so when I enter a forum--be it a political debate one or a sports one--people don't believe that I'm not AI and am a real person. I just, and not to be pretentious at all, have a higher IQ and am a pretty philosophical dude, but at the same time like superficial things and sports (with some stats thrown in).

I think we can all agree that we like the Cubs, but for me, it's their notion of time that stands apart from the rest. From our nonsensical superstitions to our 2016 story, we're different in a way that no other team can claim. Our history is rich, our melancholy is rich, and our thoughts are rich. In the end, it's ups and downs, but the Cubs always possess some intrinsic value that even I can't understand.

I hope this helps. You can always use an AI detector to prove that I'm human.

There's an episode of Friends, one of my favorites, where Joey has to write a character reference letter for Monica and Chandler's adoption.  Joey feels self conscious about his intelligence and his writing ability.  So what he does is he writes the letter straight up, then gets a thesaurus and randomly replaces a bunch of words in the letter with big 'smart sounding' words, not realizing that not using them correctly just sounds silly and unnatural.

Anyway, I don't know why I'm bringing this up right now.

Sounds interesting, and I think it's the problem with me. It's called "purple prose," and it often makes someone sound less natural. My typing speed is fast (150+ WPM), so it's easy to spit some large words and hope for them to make sense. However, I try to inject some informalities at times, and when I speak to normal individuals, it's full of them (dude, bro, etc.). Conversely, if I'm speaking to some sort of scholar or historian, I wouldn't say those words. Here, I'm comfortable with both, because I'm pretty into stats and that sort of thing.

My mom watches Friends--never liked the show. But it's a good lesson, I suppose.
