  1. I think the Sox made a nice deal for a young impact pitcher and a possible 25/90 third baseman. I'm not sure how these prospects they traded will do but I like how this helps Boston.
  2. Who is your favored candidate for SS? AGonz? Neifi? Cedeno with all of 80 major league at bats? an injury prone and past his prime Nomar? Lugo Lugo Lugo Lugo Lugo... My feeling is that Tampa is going to wait for Furcal to be signed and then start taking bidders unless some team overpays for Lugo right now. IMO it's going to take a top everyday prospect and a top pitching prospect at the least. Is he worth a Cedeno and a Hill?
  3. I'm not sure what else the Yanks have to offer in young inexpensive value.
  4. I'd still sign Giles and package Murton to Philly for Abreu if that's what it would take.
  5. Once Mac starts hitting his J's we will be one tough team to beat. Florida earned the win last night.
  6. Actually, heres' his K/BB ratio broken down from July - the end of the season: July: 17K 11BB August: 15K 14BB Sep/Oct: 19K 15BB I don't see an improvment....maybe his strike/ball ratio improved? Interesting Nolan. He had to have been ahead in the count more in the second half....I'm hoping or he was just more lucky. Also, he could have had some blowup games and they skewed the stats.
  7. Too bad we couldn't have had 10/10 too!
  8. I wouldn't be surprised to see the White Sox move one of their starting pitchers for a player like Pierre or a player with a good bat.
  9. I wouldn't count the Cards out of the Giles thing until Giles is signed. It seems to me that we see a lot of free agents are signed by teams that were not suppose to be interested.
  10. I was satisfied with Williams production last year as a 5th man, don't get me wrong. But Williams is a far cry from the production of Lowe or Morris at this point in the game. And it's a fact that quality pitching will when you more games than offense. Yes, I think our offense/outfield needs to be addressed first. But, I think both issues could be solved within our budget. And a rotation of: Prior Z Wood (barring a healthy season) Maddux Morris / Lowe .....would be absolutely devastating! Williams as a Cub: 3.91 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 109 ERA+ Lowe: 3.61 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 113 ERA+ Morris: 4.11 ERA, 1.27, 104 ERA+ That doesn't look like a far cry at all. In fact, he was better than Morris. This is what scares me about Williams.... As a Cub: 59k / 44bb You'r also completely disregarding his numbers last year with the Giants, and also disregarding the fact that those Cubs #'s are based on 100 ip's - half of the ip's of Lowe / Morris. I think as the season progressed so did Williams K/BB or at the very least his strike/ball ratio.
  11. I would like to see the Cubs go for Quintin and I would take Gonzalez or Vasquez to help Arizona with their money problems.
  12. Hill would be a better back-up 3B than Jose Macias. I don't want either Mr. Hoops.
  13. I think Hill is lazy and I hope the Cubs have nothing to do with him.
  14. He would have been used like Hill was or any other young pitcher that Baker has. Let him come into an inning with no one on base but Baker doesn't seem to grasp this thought. Look at what he did to Sanchez against St. Louis for how Baker puts young guys in.
  15. He should fit right in. I thinks it's ironic that Hendry is getting these guys that can catch the ball but yet gets a pitcher that walks them. As far as I know there is no defense for a walk. C'mon Cuse... hasn't Baker taught you anything? Allowing all those walks IS defense. With all those runners bottling up the basepaths how can anybody score? I must apologize for going to that well again. Sorry. Baker has taught me something BK that's for sure. Baker has created that well and I'm sick of him making us fall into it over and over again. By the way, how do you feel abut Snyder retiring?
  16. He should fit right in. I thinks it's ironic that Hendry is getting these guys that can catch the ball but yet gets a pitcher that walks them. As far as I know there is no defense for a walk.
  17. Other than his stubborn refusal to admit that Remlinger should not be used as a LOOGY and his decision at the beginning of last year to go with Rusch in the bullpen and Dempster in the rotation, how has Baker "mismanaged the pen?" Don't get me wrong -- Baker's faults are legion. Yet, his "mismanagement of the bullpen" is a purported fault that is repeated ad nauseum despite the fact that I have not heard a single compelling argument (other than the ones cited above) as to why this is so. He has a repeate history of: overusing guys while leaving others with many day between outings. Bringing the wrong guy in to face a batter Using a guy for one batter who should be used the entire inning. Double switches for no good reason Besides isn't the part I bolded enough? Plus: Getting some guys work in a blowout when the Cubs are winning that haven't pitched. No reason to have a starter still pitching when the score is 8-1 and you have 12 pitchers on the staff. Overusage of pitchers that just came off surgery. Putting young players in difficult situations in their first time up and then not pitching them for around 10 days. If they fail how does this help them?
  18. If the breakdown of Eyre contract has been posted, then I apologize, but the bolded area gave me  ](*,) . When does a solid, but unspectular reliever get a "no-trade clause?" Something tells me, the Cubs were the only team to even offer a no trade clause. No trade clause ????????? Is that a common relief pitcher contract clause ??? I wonder if Perez has one too.
  19. My question is.....is Walker better than a middle reliever? This offense is not effecient and is trading a player that could be productive the right thing to do when you "supposedly" have all this young quality pitching in the minors? Let me add that Sisco would have never had the numbers he had at KC for the Cubs because of how Baker mismanages the pen. I wonder how many good players are going to be traded because of Bakers faults.
  20. It seems that the Cubs are just doing the same things they always do. I wonder how Remmy...I mean Eyre is going to do? This is like reliving the same nightmare over and over.
  21. How about spending what it takes just to keep him from going to STL? If Giles ends up in STL, we might as well crown STL the 2006 division champs. If he goes outside the division, fine. But Hendry can't let Giles go to STL. Would the Cubs be better off if they had Abreu in right, Pierre or another good bat like Ichiro in in CF and Furcal at SS then the Cards if they just added Giles? Everyday player wise?
  22. I don't really like that move either as I'd rather have Cedeno and overpay/trade for impact CF and RF guys. But....having Baker just kills what I would do and Hendry has to taylor this lineup for him. :x It may be the way Hendry thinks too so I can't just blame Baker.
  23. I agree to an extent. But from the sounds of Sullivan's piece Hendry will not be bidding at all. On the other hand, I'd say three years is a liberal estimate to the Cubs window of opportunity with the current crop of pitchers. IMO he has to make a big play now. Another 89 win team will not get the job done. I don't think Sully knows what's really going on so I'm not that worried about it CiNY.
  24. That's true, but names like Kevin Mench don't exactly scream "impact". I don't think Hendry should extremely overpay for Giles, but the impression I get is that he's not even going to try. I haven't heard of anyone offering Giles more than three years. It's frustrating because Giles provide EXACTLY what the Cubs are lacking, and they don't even seem interested. Mench is the kind of player they have been getting and you're right he is not an impact. I don't believe what good ole Sully says for a minute and we'll see how Hendry feels as the signings go on.
  25. I think there is a limit on how much Hendry should spend on a 35 year old RF and I think it's a decent move to not get in a bidding war over Giles. How much is too much? What if it goes to 13 a year or more and for 4 years? I think there is a decent limit like 12 per to which Hendry could go up to and after that I see no reason to overpay for Giles. Now, if Hendry ends up getting some toolsy 280/310 kind of guy in right then I am for overpaying for Giles but if he can pull off a trade for an impact RF I'm all for it.
